5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Day 14 candling. My 13yo helped me mark air cells...lots of saddles, especially the Marans. Three of my CCLs were detached which I was unable to see previously but they are much more prominent now. And we candled from the top and bottom...before we did the bottoms only. And still one is in the center side of the egg, but it is fixed in place. All 32 are swimming and moving. In at least 4-5 we could see beaks & feets!!!

That just made it so much more real! They are taking up 1/4 to 1/3 of the egg now. There is only one I am really worried about...just didn't look to me like the other ones, but it is still in there with pulsing veins. Not sure if it is getting ready to quit.

Nice pics! I'm so jealous of the Golden Cuckoo Marans

. The roos are just gorgeous!!!

Everyone has their ways of dealing with mites, worms, parasites etc. I take the easy way out. Ivermectin Cattle Pour On...a few drops on the back of the neck of each chicken works like Frontline. I had a bad case of mites, and now that I do it routinely, I've never had a problem since. Added bonus, it's a complete wormer too. Drawbacks: it's not tested for poultry, and I do egg withdrawl for 10 days to be safe. Lots of folks swear by it.

The pour on? I thought you had to use the injectable for buggies on the outside?

Down to 5 Rhodebars, and two Marans.  These eggs came very cold.  So, glad to have what I have.

I am not seeing anything from the eggs that took a week to get here.   Only day 5, but no veining showing, so took a few out and looked..nothing started in any.   Will give them two more days.

Let me know how these turn out. Stupid PO!

7 of my 10 eggs are still kickin'! Two were clears, one was a quitter three days ago...hadn't moved or grown since. Took all three out, so have the 7 still in there! Never knew how exciting egg hatching was! I'm totally addicted now!!

My oldest little lady turns 12 today, I feel so old. LOL She helped me candle the and we seen a 'dancing' chick. She thought I was telling her a story when I seen it the other day..... you should have seen her face!

Check out Sally Sunshines article, link is on page 1. There is a whole portion on detached, rolling, and saddle shaped aircells. That article, & Sally herself has saved my chickies butts numerous times!!:D

:woot Lockdown and then chicks!:weee

When you set the eggs for hatching, mark the outline of the saddle air cell and make sure the chick pips inside of it.

:sick Good job getting that thing out of there!

:th What! I am glad he is ok and of course the most important thing is that the eggs were tended too!

There is a lot of great information in those links!

That's a great idea for a contest!  :thumbsup

Such a little doll!  :love

I hope they do too!  :fl

Yay!  Yes, she'll be an EE.  But EE's are great chickens.  I love mine and love the pretty eggs.

Yes air cells can reattach if the eggs are treated properly and the damage isn't too bad.

That is great news!  So glad they are getting along well.

When you candle and tilt the egg the air cell will "roll" around with the motion of the egg rather than staying anchored at the top like it should.

Oh no!  That is awful.  :hugs   I do hope he is alright.  I use to worry so much when my husband drove a truck.

That is one beautiful brooder.  Lucky chicks!

I'll give those articles a read thanks. how do i make sure the chick pips inside the air cell?

How many chickens are you talking about? How old are they? How many eggs were you getting?
I would blame light. They may also have been stressed by an attack you could be unaware of.

Had you been offering a smaller size? There are various sizes of grit. For chickens most sell 3 sizes, #1 (1-2 mm) for very young chicks, #2 (2-4 mm) for young growing birds and #3 (4-6mm). It can be categorized other ways, chick grit, finisher grit, layer grit, etc.. It's always better to offer a larger size if unsure since grit too small will simply pass right through the gizzard and not aid in grinding. I believe LF by 12 weeks should be on adult grit.
I was always under the impression that birds fed only a manufactured feed didn't need grit since the grains in the feed were already ground.
I offered some 3 week old chicks some #1 grit in a separate feeder this summer. These chicks had been fed starter feed and nothing else. In less than a day, they emptied the grit feeder.
I since read a report that said grit can improve feed conversion by 8%. I now keep all 3 sizes and feed accordingly.

Same goes for worms. They can become resistant in 8 or fewer generations so if one worms on a schedule, using a different type is important.
I have 4 chickens. They are almost 2 years old. I was getting about 2 eggs a day.
