5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Good Morning All.

I woke up this morning day23 to one more silkie baby in the incubator and one more silkie pip. My hatch is moving very slow and very spread out over the days. Every time I want to put the dry babies in the brooder I find another pip so have yet to move them, Id really like to do it this morning. Im hoping the piped egg zips and hatches pretty quick.

Aww, cute kitties.  You must love them like my mom did.  She always had to have a cat or two.  Back in the 80's, we raised and showed the Persian.  Didn't do it for too long, didn't like the way folks were at the shows!  Just had our pretty kitties as pets after a while.

Mine are just barn cats. It's their job to keep the critters out of my feed & coops. 3 of them are still kittens though, so they often get spoiled & get to come in where it's warm at night.

X2.

This is why I kind of think my bantam Cochin roo isn't doing his job....those look like PB Silkies from the photo, but hard to tell. My Silkes do carry vaulting in their lines, so that is where that comes from. I'm not thrilled with the amount of color leakage and comb configuration in my Silkies, but they are nice. I have seen worse at the county fairs. The Cochins are SQ, so I was hoping she got their eggs. Boo.

MY silkies to be PB? if so...:celebrate

That does! I'll have to look more closely at them tomorrow. I know that the showgirl is all black skin, beak, and big eyes. Is a showgirl a Silkie just with a specific feathering "pattern?"

OK.

SILKIE showgirl.
this is created through a naked neck turkin, and a silkie. You must breed the two until you get 8 different traits:
-black skin
-crest
-fluffiness
-5 toes
-naked neck
-bow tie
-no beard
-feathered feet

that is what makes a showgirl. I would LOVE to have a showgirl! I absolutely love them!

Their feather patterns also change as birds mature, so it is difficult to judge the quality of an individual bird until they are fully grown.

hope this helps!

Showgirls can actually be with or without the bowtie. The genetics work as follows:
Naked neck is dominant so will show even with only 1 gene for it.

2 Genes for naked neck gets you a completely naked neck with no bowtie. Everything bred to this bird will be either nn or bowtie.
1 nn gene plus 1 gene for feathered neck makes bowties.
No nn gene makes geathered neck.

When you breed 2 birds with bowties you get all 3 gene combination possibilities. If you want to ensure all bowties breed fully feathered to complete nn to ensure 1 copy of each gene every time. To produce only complete nn breed 2 complete nn. To get only complete nn & bowtie breed nn & bowtie.

Your are welcome! Double yolked eggs are very tough to hatch.
I set 21 eggs. Only 8 made it to lockdown and 5 hatched. I gave one Jubilee Orpington, one SFH, two Leghorn/ Partridge Barthuhner crosses and one EE/ PB cross. I will get some pics tomorrow.
Those are very nice breeds that hatched!

Pretty! And apropos staging, too. Now, to teach them to look at the camera...

I wanted to say thank you for your assistance/commentary here. the NatureForm link was VERY helpful - I went in & removed & tossed three eggs from today's set after reading it!

The focus light made them turn when I took the picture. They did do fairly well with posting.
I remember seeing someone with 100% hatch rate but they only set 4 eggs and the minimum on the rules says you must set 6 to qualify.

I just had a chick hatch. It woke me up peeping. Now will the others still hatch..... I am not going to help any of them sadly I do not want weak stock. What hatches, hatches. So as of now I have 19 new babies

I like your Plan!

You have to catch lots of fish!

Final count: 21 of 29 hatched, lost the first one due to operator (me) error. So my final total is 20 of 29 or .6896 (69%). Will post pic this afternoon or evening as I am waiting to add the assisted hatch to the brooder as it has a umbilical protrusion.
