How dare him breed those paints to partridge... I bet he kept one of the partridge offspring also to see if it throws paints... sicko rule breaker...

I'd like to know why it is "a big no no"? One poultry geneticist specifically suggested breeding a paint to a partridge for help in determining some of the genetics of paint. Predictions did not pan out and the parrtidge and I believe all offspring were sold; the offspring being sold as PQ, I believe. This was not a male, so obviously a different person. FWIW, I supplied the partridge cockerel for that experiment

because pens are not kept pure anymore. Experiments are fine but to allow those birds to go into breeders flocks is wrong.

WOW those one turned into the great debate..
1. My question never did get answered..have you hatched any eggs from this pairing...if so what were results?
2. I personally will not sell eggs from pairings that i have not hatched from. I don't feel it is fair to the buyer. Just because i believe a pairing is going to produce nice babies doesn't necessarily make it so. In my opinion i owe it to people to have a clue as to what they should expect from a hatch based off my results. I get it that there is no guarantee you will hatch with exact results i had.
3. From what i have read on here we all agree the dunn/buff/champagne color is an undesirable trait..so in my opinion we should be trying to use offspring with less leakage in this project moving forward. Do we agree?
4. As breeders we are going to try different things to help us learn..when/if i sell these offspring they go to pet homes where the new owner is told it is a Pet Quality (cull) bird and should NOT be used in a breedings program..only acception being if this person is choosing to pursue project i was attempting with the breeding in the first place...as we see and have seen unfortunately people take birds (from the latest "craze") they have purchased as Pet Quality (culls) for a couple bucks and immediately pair them up with whatever they have and attempt to sell eggs to CASH IN on the craze...i think this just hinders projects as now there are more project birds out there with undesirable traits...
I'm not arguing with anyone's opinion or attempting to "stir the pot" just putting a few of my opinions out there...your FEEDBACK IS MORE THAN WELCOME

Finally a voice of reason. Thanks Bob!

and hinders accepted varieties as well.

You are correct. And a good point in comparison is the gray silkie.
Breeding is not as simple as stringing together genetic code. For the simple reason chickens cant read. And second what reguards are being taken to insure proper type first before the color? Its all gray matter until desired results are delivered. Keep muddling up colors and you string all the genetic code together you want, if the birds arent pure neither are results. But what does that matter as if plaid pops out of a shell cash cows will be there to get their slice of the dough with no reguards to type, inbreeding or general health of the birds. IE.... self blue silkies. aka lavenders. They dont breed pure, they dont hatch and if they do they may or not live long and if they do make it to adulthood, better get them a seeing eye dog and a neurologist. So paints... They have issues too, and those wanting to breed pure lines. Better make sure you keep a closed flock because I guarantee you will be hatching surprises.

most certianly! I think almost all of us working with this color are, and should be, striveing to improve on the certian traits that can be improved i.e. coloration of feathering, skin, and eyes, as well as over all type and feathering. This is why I chose to put my guy in with my 3 best black hens hopeing to improve on type and coloration. My babies are still young with the oldest being 8 weeks now and so far I cannot see any of the dunn leakage but that may come with age and maturity. Only time will tell. I just hope they are better than the father who really is not that bad at all but still its always good to improve.

i agree and nicely put.
I know what my birds cost me a year and have no "delusion" of ever making money off them or even coming close to covering my costs....the time i spend with my birds is my "me" time to enjoy what seems to have become a passion..my wife may call it an obsession..lol...not a care in the world when i'm sitting in a Penn surrounded by fluff, my girls chatting away at me especially if i have a glass of goose with me :) through my birds i have met some super people, made some great friends, had a lot of fun and hopefully in return i have helped the breed and will continue to do so through the experiences i have learned and the ongoing knowledge i gain from the folks i have met and will meet. Bottom line for me is trying to do the "right" thing foe the breed that has done the right thing for me!

BTW.. congrats on B.O.B. at the VA show...definitely the nicest silkie there..in my opinion
sorry tend to ramble when i have more than 2 cups of tea in the morning

ETA: yep another straight dude that loves his piles of fluff
hard as heck to be a bad azz biker when a silkies sitting on your lap and ur blow drying her

Now this is what i and i am sure among others that likes to see, people communicating and not fighting. Great info, i too have started on the road of paints my birds are young yet. I can tell you when i received my 2 cockerals they did not have a lick of leakage in them at 4 months but now one is getting some what i call the smoke coloring and the other getting some buffish or i think what people are calling (dunn) but i think they are turning out nice as far as type.
