x2.. It is so discouraging to buy eggs from somebody or bird and it turns out to be everything BUT what you want because it came from a mixed pen or had project birds in the flock. The seller didn't bother to tell you and you are left with a mess.I just hatched eggs from a black silkie pen(looking for pure black) I was so excited until the hatch.

Blacks are tough because what appear to be black are really Very dark blue. I've seen this surprise owners at shows, who show a bird thinking it is black & the judge marks the card Blue.

I wonder how many paints are being bred to blues when the breeder is thinking they have a black bird. Could this be a reason that they are so many cropout colors for those breeders? Have not bred paints so no knowledge here, but have been following the threads about them. and have questions reguarding them.

April ,I will have to post a picture of my black silkies I just hatched ,then you will understand why I get discouraged

Posted this on the Paint thread but I guess your not reading it, so I'll repost to this one.

oc = means Off Color ( answer to your question)

If you don't mind my asking, what shows did your splash win? I don't remember hearing ( reading in the poultry press) about any silkies taking a Super Grand at any shows, which is Very rare since there is a lot of judges who do not like to place silkies on champion row.

I'm really not understanding the "BIG" issue with paints. They are a new color with many disqualifications. Breeders are getting every color under the rainbow with the hatches. If a person bids and knows the offspring is from paints, then they need to understand what comes with that.

You get 6 toes, 4 toes, pigment holes, occasional cross beaks, off coloring, chicks of many different colors. I can understand if someone is selling the non-paint colors as true colors, this would be very upsetting and wrong.

Buyers should not be mixing the non-paint offspring into their breeding flocks of Standard colors, but we as sellers certainly can not stop them from doing so.

I agree with most of ur post...but don't we as sellers have an obligation to buyers to at least have a clue as to what the seller should expect from the purchase. ie: at least have hatched something from the pairing

I agree completely. I never sell any chick from a paint breeding without giving a detailed description of how they originated and what they could expect. I have never sold a black chick from my paint breeding as "BLACK". That is wrong!!!! I also tell them they will not mature to anything other than Pet Quality birds.

And its good that you stress the pet quality issue to them, its the right thing to do. But have you ever wondered how many of those pet quality birds are put into breeding pens by someone trying to cash in on the fad? This is one reason anything not worthy of breeding from my project pens is culled and put down, not sold.

I really do not know why hoppy is getting a hard rap on this one. first from my knowledge the paints that originated here in the us came from a black, white, splash gene pool and there are people breeding to showgirls already. I do have to agree that it is essential to know a birds gene pool so i guess that is where a persons knowledge of knowing who to trust falls in play and even then there could be surprises that the breeder did not even know about. I also do like to do a pre hatch before selling anything but i think no one really knows what is in their birds history unless they have 5 generations of breedings and some good tracking records.

Bottom line for me is trying to do the "right" thing foe the breed that has done the right thing for me!

Winner winner chicken dinner. I agree!

BTW.. congrats on B.O.B. at the VA show...definitely the nicest silkie there..in my opinion
sorry tend to ramble when i have more than 2 cups of tea in the morning

Thank Bob! Appreciate it!!!

I agree with you squig, I have no idea why Hoppy is being hit so hard.

Sportsterjeep, I usually give my non-paints to a friend of mine, that only has silkies as pets. She picks up the entire hatch at one time. She does not show or sell to make money, she just likes them. Or I give them to my Brother-n-law. Some I have kept back because they look decent.

Why would you kill them? When they could make a pet home some nice pets?
