because pens are not kept pure anymore. Experiments are fine but to allow those birds to go into breeders flocks is wrong.

x2.. It is so discouraging to buy eggs from somebody or bird and it turns out to be everything BUT what you want because it came from a mixed pen or had project birds in the flock. The seller didn't bother to tell you and you are left with a mess.I just hatched eggs from a black silkie pen(looking for pure black) I was so excited until the hatch.

I ended up with twisted beaks and four toes and the breeder didn't tell me until after I complained. She then told me she knew she had defective birds in her flock. I was so angry. I kicked myself in the b(*t though as she burnt me before but I let it go. I should have known better. Karma will get her though.
I know nothing about paints and plan on keeping it that way. I have enough of a time trying to keep whites white and blacks without hackle color.

ETA: rant over, back to your regularly scheduled auction

Blacks are tough because what appear to be black are really Very dark blue. I've seen this surprise owners at shows, who show a bird thinking it is black & the judge marks the card Blue.

I wonder how many paints are being bred to blues when the breeder is thinking they have a black bird. Could this be a reason that they are so many cropout colors for those breeders? Have not bred paints so no knowledge here, but have been following the threads about them. and have questions reguarding them.

answer to question 1- I have 9 eggs developing in the incubator right now.. people think I 'm crazy to be hatching right now, I live in maine, it gets cold here and we get alot of snow. most people arent hatching in maine because they don't want to have birds living in their house all winter. I show my birds so the splash is in the breeding pen but come march, she will be done so I can get her ready to show again. I don't keep 100 silkies, I don't have the room bob, but I'm glad you do. You know I have admired your birds for years but white only goes so far.

Thanks Bob that answers my question. I've asked others but never got a straight answer. lol I know your birds ARE black( seen for myself), so finally I can say that I have an answer.
