6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Plastic ziplock bags are great for eggtopsy of any egg, stinky or not.

Sometimes you'd be surprised at what you find. If you go to www.brinsea.com on the left-hand margin they have their incubation handbook for downloading. In it is a most-helpful index of eggtopsy results cause and effects. You'd be surprised at what humidity problems can do to your embryos!

Last hatch I had a bunch of last minute (Day 19/20) quitters. Turns out it was oxygen deprivation due to hatching sea-level eggs at a high altitude (pores are not conducive to thin mountain air). Had I not done an eggtopsy I would've wondered when they quit and not been able to figure it out... BYC provided the other clues as to what all happened. I also found one egg with a malformation (open brain) which had the cause and effect listed in the handbook. Hopefully never have to see that again!
thats totally fascinating

I set BBS Australorps(Blue black splash) and Trader Joes Leghorn eggs yesterday.

The incubator and humidity pump are working so far. I hope I have the tubing wound correctly this time on the pump.
How are the Australorp eggs? I really do hope you have an excellent hatch rate. Let me know if you need to rehome either.
Ok, here are a series of photos just for the fun of it. A little Yorkie I used to have along with a little BO I used to have. The Yorkie wants to play, the BO doesn't!

This is Darling! We have a Boston Terrier and the first crop of chicks we got were very curious about him...One girl walked up to his back side and pecked him right in the business end. He has given them a wide berth since!
Kiddos are ending there night decorating a barn shaped gingerbread house, its super cute though I really want to eat it lol.

Once they are off to bed DH and I are going to catch up on some SOA, just finished the last season and oh my what a shocking way to end the season. I cant wait to see what happens in this years season.
OMGosh! nothing like a carving fork to the noggin to end the season! We have to wait for the DVDs or season 7 reruns...our kids told us they had recorded it for us but sadly ...no...These are serious withdrawls we are experiencing.

I have olive eggers that are black copper maran cross true amerucana 2 blue genes. pullets look like a marans hen. unfortunely I hatched 75% roosters this year.. sold the rest
when my hen start laying again I'll post the pretty olive egg.... I got 1 egg today is all...

I crossed cream legbars with my cuckoo marans pullet still waiting for them to lay.. Should olive too..

My super stinky eggs where past 21 days... No development to be seen, they where under a broody
So sorry about that....

So I was going to also set some olive eggs but I thought that hen had stopped laying on me. Only today we found not one, but two nests of sneaky chicken eggs of a few different kinds!

LOL...my hens do that SOOOO OFTEN...

You guys Crack me up! :gig :lol Right?! I hope they hatch for you. Great prize! Thank you @michaelf Neat idea I just hatched a cross with crests and fluffy feet that *should* give me green eggs. Bantam Cochin over Crested Cream Legbar.

They are 5 weeks old
I love fuzzy legs too. But only on chickens. Have to have my wife shave her fuzzy legs.
Day 4 today!:weee
Yep. Seems like it should be half way already..
Hum, I hadn't really thought about it, but in my flock right now I have some F2 EE laying green, 2 OE, & 2 CCL. They are under 3 SFH Roos, of which 1 is crested. &I also have 2 crested SFH (hen & pullet), & a couple of EE cockerals who have started trying to get w/ the girls. (I gotta get them out asap so my SFH girls can make pure eggs of course) But meanwhile, possibly some of my NYD HAL chicks could be colored egg layers w/ crests...interesting. I will have to take lots of photos when these eggs hatch & we can all try to guess from the chicks.
Good luck figuring them all out. I try to hatch mine in clutches. I use the clear plastic containers that strawberries come in for the small amount if eggs.
. Cute x 2.

I have been trying to catch up with the posts on the HAL forum and have noticed all the initials for breeds members are talking about. Is there a page on BYC that tells you what initials stand for what breed? (if that makes since) I know BO is for Buff Orpington but some of the initials used by members I'm not connecting with breeds.
