6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I used the quart-size chick feeder & waters within reach of the nest for my broody (something I already had). I put marbles in the waterer until all the chicks were running around. I've also heard that the wide bottom cat dishes work well.
OMG

I've read that you should use gloves when handling eggs because the oils on your hand can clog their pores.
Is the concern with touching eggs that skin oils will clog pores, or that the bloom will rub off? If it's the bloom thing, then gloves or not wouldn't make a difference, right? I hand-turn my eggs, and was thinking I should be using some kind of gloves, maybe latex? Or will washing my hands first be enough?

My landlord is a woodworker and had a workshop here on the land so he creates tons of wood shavings! Today I found huge bins full so at least I can save the birds from being muddy too.
Same here, just came back from unloading a large bag of wood shavings in the wet spots of the run. My husband downed 14 trees and with the neighbors portable saw mill at use, there is piles of it. The only problem now is the pile is water logged. Thankfully we brought down 4 large bags to the barn before the rain.

Here is a picture of the bird who hatched 1st in NYD HAL 2014

Oh God, just the WORDS "longer days" makes my heart sing!! I seriously believe I've developed SDD this winter. LOL

I just wash immediately before- with Dawn (ie, not moisturizing but a grease cutter) and I touch NOTHING else before handling.

Hey, it seemed logical to me!  How was I supposed to know they'd pop like that?

okay, yes, it was a joke.

Pretty babies. What's the plan for them? Are they broke to ride or drive? Maybe both?
