6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Here is a picture of an australorp chick. They look like they have eye liner on. Some do not have quite this much white on them, but they do have white tips on their wings.

Here is the 1 from a brown egg of yours which I think is either half or pure Astrolorp (the other 3 from your eggs don't look a thing like it btw)

What do you think ;?

Since then the australorp cut his foot badly and has been in the hospital pen for 3 weeks. The welsummer roo attacked me once to often and now resides in the roo pen with the buff orp, whose name is Mr. Horney. Things are much calmer in that pen now. I would think if it happened to be pure australorp it would have white wing tips. At least the hen was probably australorp. It doesnt look like it has the white wing tips that I associate with australorps. What do you think ;?

I have 6 early chicks hatched & in the bator now (still aren't even due for another 2.5 hrs) but the slightly early chicks are always more robust for me, so I'm good w/ these, although setting up the brooder just now was kinda a shocker, esp. as we have now switched over to snow/sleet outside (to top off 4 inches of rain last night, off/on rain all day, 2 weeks of rain, standing water on the side of a mountain, & urgent need to get groundwork done to built barn as rescue horses are waiting on that for their actual rescue, ugh).

So here is another pic. of today's hatchers.

the front lower left is from one of my blue eggs (CLL or maybe EE under SFH or poss. EE)
the front right if from a 3rd mixed flock & was 1st actually out last night,
the others are all from the Auastralorp's gang (maybe if I'd ever learn to spell it I could have some!)
but those 3 others are all mostly blue/grey & more or less Ame / EE looking to me.

Nice!

Today is day 10 i candled again and took weights. We have 3 confirmed not fertile, and 1 maybe the rest are all doing great. The last maybe i dont see any veins on but it definately has a mass in it of some fashion. The remaining 8 have very nice veins but saddle/wobbly aircells which they seem to be growing fine with. So still have 9 of 12 muscovy eggs, chicken eggs i could not candle because it was not dark enough before i had to head out for holiday travel. i will assume they are still the same as my previous count until i candle again on day 14, last count was i believe 3 clear of 11 for chicken eggs.

LOL we try not to go overboard with all the cooking for Christmas. we usually have turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing and a lemon meringue pie and a chocolate pie. (Basically because I am the designated holiday chef and what I say we have, we have...well, in my mind at least.) LOL

Holy Wow! I just realized that it's week 2 for me! Candling tonight!!!! I think I will do it at 12:00 am on Christmas morn' so I can find out if I've been naughty or nice this year.

Cooked a turkey today..with stuffing. Will do all of the other goodies tomorrow. :)

The chicken chart shows 4 eggs for the lay rate. It says below average to average for egg size. My Patridge lay very dark large to a bit bigger eggs. They are in the large range according to weight. They lay more eggs than Marans according to the chart.

Today I make a coconut cake and will start overnight rolls for breakfast tomorrow, Christmas day.

Oh man, I can just smell those rolls now.
