6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Congrats! Go blue chickens go!
Yes, I have five of them now!

I have a pip in the BLRW eBay egg! Solo will have a friend!

This egg has a horrid saddle air cell. The pip is right at nearly the very top of the egg.

Still waiting (and waiting and waiting) on the marans egg(s). Would like to get at least one.

But I have a pip! This hatching will be of great comfort to all of us in the household as Solo has quite a set of lungs.
Oh Yes, they can be very loud when they are alone.

Ron, I bet your TJ's will go like popcorn!
The did look very healthy so they will likely keep me up all night long...

I SAT them at noon on December 11, 2014 so 22 days

They can go for another day. 24 is pushing it for Marans but still possible

Quote: I have wheatens and some blue and blacks. The wheatens are good birds but getting old. I personnally don't have good luck with marans. My chihuahuas killed my new wheaten pullet , she flew into their pen. She was laying the prettiest dark brown eggs. Other hens are on strike.
My hens lay 10 eggs and get broody. But I haven't found them to be good mothers.
Now I gave my friend 2 pullets and they are laying a egg everyday. How long I don't know .....

Just did a candling of my 35 Trader Joe's eggs (due to hatch the 18th). 33 have veins!

Oh, my. I was just expecting one or two per dozen set.....

I think I'm going to hit my pullet limit with this batch.

The egg with the dent didn't hatch and smells awful. My husband is burying it on our land. So sad, I wish it had hatched. After I got it from under the broody and was able to look at it I could see other cracks had formed in the egg. I don't know if it was from the mamas stepping on it or the growth of the chick that caused it to have more cracks.

I think they must have been working on fertility this year!

Were the eggs big end up in the cartons you bought?

I bet they have hired an expert on fertility and hatching. I too only expected a couple per dozen--Got 17 out of 24 in the hatcher!

@ronott1 I don't recall how many of what I had sent you but I only got 7 black mutts and 1 white mutt. Total 8

The thing is I always have a high percentage of hatches. I guess they couldn't handle the pressure of new years.

400

I have 9 duck,11 chickens and 15 quail coming up by the end of January.

400

The 3 bantams you see are from a previous hatch.

I will try next HAL!

LOL!

Right-o. They were air cell up in the carton and NO red expiry date stamped on the egg. Also nice thick white chalky shells.

Really? Were folks complaining to them about low hatch rates? Every TJ person I've talked to just looks at me like I'm from Mars when I mention hatching them.
