6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

LOL we try not to go overboard with all the cooking for Christmas.  we usually have turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing and a lemon meringue pie and a chocolate pie.  (Basically because I am the designated holiday chef and what I say we have, we have...well, in my mind at least.)  LOL

Holy Wow!  I just realized that it's week 2 for me!  Candling tonight!!!!  I think I will do it at 12:00 am on Christmas morn' so I can find out if I've been naughty or nice this year.  :D

I haven't been naughty or nice this year.... Can I say I was indifferent all year lol? So I'm not taking any chances, I won't candle again until this weekend lol

Okay, it's categorized as a "Layer" but it's productivity is "below average to average?" Or is that the egg size?
The chicken chart shows 4 eggs for the lay rate. It says below average to average for egg size. My Patridge lay very dark large to a bit bigger eggs. They are in the large range according to weight. They lay more eggs than Marans according to the chart.

Mmm Christmas goodies!! The DW is hard at it also. I don't think she slept last night. When I asked her if she did she said for a few minutes, but her side of the bed wasn't even messed with. I snuck a peek when I turned my eggs this morning and of the 8 left 5 are doing well and not sure about the other 3. There is a mass in them but I can't see movement or veining.
Today I make a coconut cake and will start overnight rolls for breakfast tomorrow, Christmas day.

Quote: DD#2 made these for a family get-together on Sunday. They are cute, delicious and you don't feel guilty eating them because they're fruit....except the marshmallow which I just overlooked since it was small

Don't forget to post lots of pictures for those of us who won't have any of our own!!

My chick is just now getting into its zipping stage. So all chicks sip the same direction? Left and right? I think id be cool to know! Cacing the big end if my egg, mine is zipping left

Ah! Thanks for the info! Those charts always confuse me. lol I deal better with actual numbers.

I believe yes for the most part, they all zip in the same direction, counter clockwise.

Did a quick candling and noticed that two of the blue marans eggs were positively glowy in comparison to the known good ones and one egg was just the darkest pitch black on the inside, so pulled them. Yep, two clears and one filled with chunky black and grey stuff in a browning yolk that didn't smell very nice. Also found two clear BLRW eggs on that candling trip.

That leaves 3 good marans and one iffy, and two real iffy BLRW's, one great bobber and one whose egg looks right, but he's not moving much.

There's A LOT of empty space in the Brinsea...... Down to 8 eggs

In the meantime, off to the store to get some dinner for tomorrow night as we're having the neighbors in. Also a bit of last minute shopping, if I dare. Tonight I'm going to make the infamous eggnog. You know, the one that one glass brings you to the party and two glasses you are the party. My cousin -- Los Alamos Nuclear Lab engineer -- described it as very tasty rocket fuel. If a glass or two of that doesn't get me into the holiday spirit at least I'll be guaranteed visions of sugar plums dancing in my head along with a couple of other Alice in Wonderland-type visions....

Joyous Christmas Eve to all and a Merry Christmas tomorrow!
