6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Last time,  I didn't get the temps to stabilize until the last 4 days. lol! I'll think I have it set all perfect, but that only lasts for  1 or 2 days. I may have to invest in a better incubator! I was going to try to make one, but  I can't even get a pre-made one to work right!

Actually, this is my third hatch, all three in a homemade 'bator and I never have to mess with it. I've used two different thermostat types, and both have been fine.

If both ends of the egg are similar, look for the end with the air cell. The important thing is for the chick to internally pip into the air cell. The chick will start to breathe when it pips into the air cell so it has to be big enough to have air in it and for the chick to pip into it and not into a place with liquid. That end needs to be up or tilted up of setting on the wire for hatching.

Straight on the side is not good. Eggs can be tilted in cartons that are cut down properly.

I can tell now which end has the air cell. It's looking good. I guess I will just put it in the egg carton with the rest of them and hope it doesn't pip at the wrong end. I likely would not see it if it did anyway. I'm determined not to be opening the incubator during lock down. I will just hope the little chick turns around.

Good Morning everyone! Hope ya'll had a wonderful Christmas. Mine was great! Nothing better than watching a 3 year old take all morning to open presents.

I did candle (to) quickly Christmas Eve; 1 of the "questionables" is growing nicely; even wiggled for me

(the other is a quitter) But one of the mottles quit and I dropped the flashlight on one of the beautifully veined red orps

I sealed the cracks the best I could with clear nail polish and put it back in the bator...now I can only hope that I didn't kill it...I want to candle it but I'm scared. Guess I'll just leave it until lockdown.
Oh dear! I hope it's okay

! I know how you feel, I forgot to plug the incubator back in yesterday morning and didn't notice for six (6!) hours. It sucks so much because I had just candled the day before and had 15 going strong! I'm going to play holiday music for them and hope that they forgive me for trying to freeze them!
Aside from that, Christmas was pretty great! lol!

Well, I have acquired all the parts to make one, so maybe I'll just buckle down and put it all together.

Perhaps in time for the Easter HAL.

I made my own incubator and the time I hatched quail eggs were in a homemade incubator also :) I have had less issue with them on temps then I have seen with ppl on bought incubators..

So glad to see everyone mention about how the eggs are looking so full! the fuller eggs seemed harder to look into.. I got a smaller version of the ozark trail flashlight my local walmart was sold out..on a side note My other half was willing to pay 50 bucks for a flash light for me to candle my eggs

I wasnt willing to spend that much for it though lol.. anyways the smaller light works but could be brighter. the guys in the eggs are sure looking full most looked crammed in there except one which seems smaller (and lots of movement) viening seems to be very thick as well so hopefully those are all good things :) My air cell looks similar to pictures ppl have posted so I figure I am on par there :) I cant wait until hatch day!! all my eggs are doing GREAT!! I did remove the two infertile eggs yesterday that never developed(they never stunk or seeped either).. I have them in vinagar to test em out :)

GM! This is what I woke up too. One hatched about 30 min ago and the others are pending. I give them 3 days.

Cool!!! I just love baby chickies!!!! They're always so adorable and as they grow, they just turn from adorable to absolutely gorgeous!!! (Especially just after the molt when their feathers are all nice and shiny!)

You mentioned straight on the side not being good, but the Brinsea Mini has them on their side, is there a higher percentage of piping on the wrong end with the Mini?
