6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

The egg with the dent didn't hatch and smells awful. My husband is burying it on our land. So sad, I wish it had hatched. After I got it from under the broody and was able to look at it I could see other cracks had formed in the egg. I don't know if it was from the mamas stepping on it or the growth of the chick that caused it to have more cracks.

The pedialyte seemed to perk her up a bit. And I realized she has a problem with her left leg. It's not stiff, but she doesn't seem to have much control of it and it sticks straight back like in the picture.
Tape the legs together ... like you would for splayed leg. Keep them together for a day. I put mine like this..taped, in a cup, or glass with a paper towel. Had to do this with two this time. One is out and tape off, the other needs the foot still wrapped, crooked toe. Should be fine by tomorrow. Doing this while they are still very young, usually works out well.
Did you help this one out? If so, it will be sleepy for a while. Getting the legs together is a good time while it's sleepy, and put into a cup for a day until it wakes up. They are sleepy after being helped out..if that's what you did, then she will wake up by tomorrow some time. My guess.

Okay, chick taped up and in a cup... THAT is a strange statement!

And the Welsummers have taken the lead: two fully hatched Welsummer babies warming up on the incubator floor.

The lone Silkie is peeping up a storm, encouraging his brothers and sisters to "get with the program"...

And let me tell you something about that little Silkie... First pip to FULL ZIP in less than half an hour.... hatched like A TOTAL BOSS!

I'm a little worried, because there's quite a few eggs left, but I cannot see any other external pips... Just the three babies in the incubator and a bunch of eggs.

I hope this is normal? It's been about twelve hours since the third chick pipped. It is hatched now...just worried that I haven't seen anymore pips.

I wrap the chick on a paper towel, put the chick into a ziplock sandwich bag and then put the tip if scissors at the base of the spine close to the skull. I then cut, cover with the paper towel and then close up the zip lock bag.

cutting high up makes it an instant and painless death for the poor thing.

I am sorry you have to do this!

I'm so sorry!! I don't have advice, but I hope she goes peacefully.

@ronott1 your chicks are beautiful!

@Roan sending warm thoughts your way, sorry or your loss.

Thanks @ronott1 for the steps to a merciful culling procedure. I will keep it in mind should the need ever arise.

Thank you all for your support. Fortunately, she didn't last much longer after I'd placed her back in the incubator.

So we're down back down to 6 little blessings!!! The really strange thing is we don't have any grey hens and our rooster is a BA but all of the chicks seem to be a grey color. While they were wet, I thought they were black but now that they're completely dry and I've really been looking closely at their feather coloring, they are all grey. Does that make sense?

Went to check on the last egg in the bator. I'll be danged if that thing isn't still alive?? And there's a v-shaped dip in the air sac were it looks to be working on a pip.

Wow! We'll see. Tomorrow is cutoff.
