6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Do I have pictures?

This is just three shots of about 18 that I took yesterday.

I have more pictures of my chickens than I do of my wife, children and grandchildren. Is that bad?

I get accused of that all the time, and even when I'm taking pics of my family, I tend to squeeze an animal in there somewhere.

The other day somebody wanted to see a picture of my daughter on my phone. I couldnt find one but i did have several sets of chicks from day old to adulthood i showed them. I thought i was the only one! Btw i did get a picture of her after that.

I just took a few updated pics of my NYD broody and her one Silkie baby. Sorry for the red lamp light they are in the freezing garage.

I moved mu broody to a heated set up too. She now has a marble heated bowl and a standard water bowl for the chicks that sits as close to the light as I dare. I just had to add the heat after one of the chicks got a bit too cold and did not make it. She had 12 so I should have seen it coming. Now she has 11 and a helping hand.

keep checking back in to see the chickys. Sold all ten I hatched Saturday. Yoooooooou might know that Sunday morning had a fox attack It got 2 Wheat amerucana hens and my beautiful blue wheaten rooster. There was feathers everywhere. The fox was still here eating on my blue boy. The fox was so tame to get him to leave I had to get within 30 feet of him.
I think its a baby fox from my neighbor a mile away He has a pair that has babies inn his wrecking yard. They feed the parents lunch scraps and dog food, there guard dogs are chained up so they are not afraid of dog or wise about dogs.
Plus I sold all the hatching eggs Saturday to a nice man.
SO I guess I'll save more eggs for the next weeks or so and try to get me a nice blue amerucana rooster.

these are my hens with a splash roo. Guess maybe I can get a blue there Too Aome of the hen have blue tails.

Heres the one that got killed.
\The plus is my chihuahuas are having chicken and kibbles tonight I could see his death be in vain.

The stupidity of some people--keeping a fox as a pet is illegal! I would call the game warden and have this taken care of. Even if the person has a permit, this is likely a violation of the permit.

Ohhhhhhhh! So many naked necks! I'm jealous. I absolutely love the naked necks! I got one NN in this hatch but sadly it didn't survive. (the only one who died, of course) It was the only chick I'd already given a name to and was the most excited to see grow. I just set a new batch on Saturday and am hoping for a few this time.

Congrats on the beautiful chicks!

I know that here our community it's against the law to encourage and feed predatious wildlife, e.g. coyotes, raccoons, foxes, bears. Even though we're in an rural setting, the urban coyotes are definitely among us. Turns out some folks were tossing fried chicken to them! Not good.... Tastes like cat! (Coyotes snatching small dogs and cats off of porches is the biggest complaint about them...Occasionally there's grumbling about a missing chicken, but IMHO those that let their birds free range in predator country either have a wealth of birds or get educated fast as to perhaps their contribution to the equation.)
