I know that here our community it's against the law to encourage and feed predatious wildlife, e.g. coyotes, raccoons, foxes, bears. Even though we're in an rural setting, the urban coyotes are definitely among us. Turns out some folks were tossing fried chicken to them! Not good.... Tastes like cat! (Coyotes snatching small dogs and cats off of porches is the biggest complaint about them...Occasionally there's grumbling about a missing chicken, but IMHO those that let their birds free range in predator country either have a wealth of birds or get educated fast as to perhaps their contribution to the equation.)

Thanks for adding the bit about people free ranging their birds contributing to the problem. It makes me absolutely FURIOUS when people complain about predators or dogs killing their free range birds and then they take it out on the predators or dogs instead of themselves for being irresponsible enough to let their animals free roam. If it is illegal to let your dogs/horses or other pets run free it should be the same for chickens. I would be upset if something got into my run but if one of my chickens got out and is eaten I would consider it my fault for not keeping my vulnerable animals properly contained.

There are always roosters.

It is likely half and half though so all is good.

I let my chickens out of their run into my back yard. They will hop the fence and go into my front yard and sometimes the neighboring field. I know the risks and rewards.

I'm not posting against those that never let their birds out of their coop and run space. But I don't think others should post against free ranging chickens and not expect someone to start stating the downfalls of locking chickens up. So please be prepared, it might happen. Not me but others more outspoken than myself also free range and post here too.


But this is a thread for hatching. So cute little chicks should be filling the posts right about now.

They are so cute. I especially like the crested fluffy one in the bottom pic.

Down to 33. Had to cull one due to cross beak.
Not sure where this came from. I don't have it in my flock. I know which cross thus came from. I had leg bands on them. This one was from my Blue Wheaten Ameraucana (not Tom my flock from shipped eggs this one is full blood Ameraucana). Out if a new hen that I hatched around April/May of 2014. Her mothers line came from my original Znaked Neck line. Did not ever have it in that flock. He'd dad was my Salmon Naked Neck, have not had any show up in any other cross with him.

Can this just pop up in a flick or does there have to be a carrier?

It is from genetics so you do not want to use a cross beak to breed from.

It is rare though.
