Some silkies have vaulted skulls that leave the brain open.so if they get pecked in the head--which causes swelling like you are seeing--then aspirin is used to treat the swelling.

pumpkin doesn't have a vaulted head though. what is seen in the pictures is the amount of fluid under her skin.

Did the fluid come from the ear? It sounds like a brain fluid leak but I do not know?

im not even sure! shes back with all the other chooks still. I hope its no disease. I still need to sell chickens to move.
if its brain fluid, would that go into her neck too?

a local vet takes birds for $60. im not sure if it would be even worth going....do I just monitor her? I don't want her dying on me. shes turning 3 this summer though

I would give her the aspirin--look for dosage by weight and monitor it. She may be fine.

Here's who is left at my house from NYD. All pullets - can you even believe it? I sold 10 as day old and then sold the 2 cockerels with 4 pullets to make 2 trios last weekend, leaving me 4 pullets.

I'm gonna keep this one. I need more light hens in my breeding pen and this one was showing good signs of nice muffs and beard as she began to feather.



These 3 are for sale. They are beautiful, but too dark for breeding for show standards (and I want mine to show well when 4H families get them from me). These will still be very beautiful as adults - there mothers are also darker but very pretty. I think they will sell well once the weather warms. It decided to be winter again here, guess it wasn't through.
