7 Month Muscovy - Hen or Drake?

I also agree it is a girl. Male Muscovy ducks have more pronounced red on their faces (looks more like dinosaur lumpy skin around the eyes, whereas a female looks more like it is just has red "feathers"). Not sure if anyone gets what I'm saying lol, but regardless I would put money down it's a girl. :)

It's true! Muscovies are kind of known for being SUPER quiet. They usually just make little cooing noises. The ducks you hear honking and quacking and making noise non-stop are mallards. They are actually 2 different species of duck. At least I've never heard of a muscovy honking all the time, but hey... I guess they're all individuals, right?

And just to add my opinion, I think she's a girl also.

Er.. I own Muscovy lol actually those are the only ducks i own. They are generally quiet BUT they make noises and the hens also quack they are certainly are not as noisy as the mallards, Canadian geese that travel by however when the whole flock gets going they have quite the conversation.. I also have drakes so i get a ton of hissing going on.

its definatley female, the quacking thing isnt really the best way to tell, they only do it when something is wrong, and its not like the mallard quack more like a honk.

No, probably not the best.. i am actually unconvinced there is a singular method that is when it comes to these birds but it's useful in the whole picture to sort out who is who. I also have found the intensity of the quack varies somewhat by bird.. i have one who is a genuine honker lol

lol mine generally make a whole lot of noise when the drakes are chasing them

Well they don't carry on with "QUACK quack quack quack QUACK!" like the mallard derived ducks do. Or my favorite early morning, single "Quack!" when they hear me. As if they want me to answer back or something.

The noisiest she gets is when she is drilling. lol She really likes to make holes

So glad so many people think she's a girl

I was really hoping she would be.

Guess she's a lady of few words lol Mine OTOH are not that quiet, they are not loud..(if you want loud, have a macaw..yes i do) but certainly have a collection of noises, could be because i have drakes.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like some kind of duck know-it-all. I've just always heard that Muscovies are really quiet. I've been thinking of getting one because I want more ducks, but I live in town on a small lot and don't want my ducks honking up the whole neighborhood. I was under the impression that they were nearly silent, but I guess they still fit the bill. (Haha... I promise that wasn't supposed to be a duck pun when I wrote it.)

No, you didn't sound like a know it all but I felt like you didn't realize I was speaking from actually owning the breed of duck

They are more quiet than most breeds though that is for sure, plus i would think it likely depends on how many you have and if there are drakes...
