I agree with MotorcycleChick. I think opening the top is fairly negligible for turning. I've got 18 eggs on right now and I candled, turned them and rotated each egg"s position tonight. I take the entire top off while I do it and it stays off for the whole time...lol.
I closed the lid at 8:55 23 seconds and it was back to normal temps at 9:02 and 20 seconds. The lights shut off at 9:02 and 36 seconds. (I was noting this for another thread...lol) So that was 7 minutes to be back to proper temps. I'm sure the eggs don't change that much. The hen rises up each time she turns her eggs and that it can be 50+ times a day. (Please correct me if I didn't state that correctly)
If I'm just turning them, it's much quicker. But I usually don't turn the eggs 1/2 a turn, I turn mine just 1/4 a turn. Interesting. The reason I turn only that much is I'm sure I read somewhere about the albumin and the turning?? Hens don't turn the egg much at one time...that's what I'm going by. I think both are fine. I also have an easier time to keep track with the 1/4 turn.
I always use gloves, nitrile right now because Walmart's been out of the vinyl (twice now!) My candler is a dollar store led flashlight. I may try something brighter.
I was going to take a better pic..but my phone's dead.
I wish that was my picture!! haha I pick mine up too. I use an led flashlight and an old candle holder I painted and turned into a candling devise![]()
Me too, except, when I have them in a turner.
Got my eggs tonight. Will set them in the morning. Little silkies on the way!
You should try candling where they set/lie,
Instead of picking them up.
I actually did that but I have a hard time knowing what I'm seeing. Guess I should try taking the top off the bator completely.![]()
There is no minimum to join in. Set whatever you have and join us! The only minimum is at least six if you want to enter the best hatch rate contest.So.....I don't think I will have enough eggs to qualify for the HAL, but I am still going to set the same day and just tag along.....if my eggs ever get here!!!!!
