7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Are you sure someone in the family didn't sneak another one in as a surprise or a joke when you weren't looking? Many years ago, my mother and her husband had a pool that desperately needed cleaning. I went to the store and bought about 50 feeder goldfish and threw them in. My stepdad didn't notice until days later (long after I left) and then tried for days to figure out how they got in there before I fessed up at my next visit! :lau

NICE!

I had babies hatch all day yesterday and last night. I have 8 babies. Here is a photo with 5 in the brooder, I now have 6 in there, and two in the bator still.

Little Silkie babies. I love this Partridge. It still had curled toes when I got up this morning, so it is now sporting a very popular pair of boots. :)

I sure hope this Partridge is a girl!

I have three paints, three blues, the Partridge, and one black, at least I'm thinking it's black..still wet in the bator.

Another pip!

I'm waiting to see if any of the others pip today.. why do they have to make me wait?!!

@RubyNala97thanks :ya

What did I do? Lol!

I am new to this....I have had some start to zip, but take well over an hour to hatch.  It's like they are tired, work for a bit, rest, work for a bit etc.  I don't know what would be TOO LONG of a wait between zipping and hatching.  But it can take a while.

I start getting nervous if they stop for longer then a half hour. I had one take 2 hours once (on my first hatch) and I just helped open the zip a little and it popped right out. It ended up having a crooked toe. Probably from taking so long. Once they are zipping, they are ready. So a tiny help, imo won't hurt. But best for them to push out, as it strengthens the legs.

Boss sent me home from work a little early!   Now up to 5 pips - chicks waited on me!!! :)

However - my first egg to pip has been pipped for 26 hours or so and no progress since... I know they can rest a while, but on my last hatch the chick died after pipping so now I am worried...but still hopeful :fl

I wait 30 hours and then take the egg out and check on how the chick sounds and see if I can moisten the membrane a little and see any veins.

That's hilarious the pool part. Yes the eggs stay on the kitchen counter before setting. Eggs get moved around a lot. They are clearly marked but.....
On the pool part I have/had a pond. I kept buying feeder goldfish for it thinking they would grow and multiply. Never could figure why I could not find any until my grandson told me he saw a turtle jump in when he went by. Hahaha I was feeding the turtle the whole time.

Congratulations to everyone having chickies!

I went into lockdown (ok...the "no-turning" phase for me) yesterday with 13 eggs for the NYE HAL. Had a few non starters and some quitters. Took one sneaky egg out the evening prior to lockdown when I candled and saw it was a quitter. Here's the eggs tonight...

So far no pips, zips or hatching. But I did hear peeping tonight

when I opened up the bator to turn the blue O eggs (due to hatch Jan 17th)

Exciting to hear the peeping!

And I'm glad that these chicks are alive after my failed Christmas hatch.

I wasn't sure what to expect after the small temp spike. I dropped the temperature ever so slightly a few days ago and opened the large holes in the bator like I had it before. Tonight I took out the dampened paper towels and instead I'm trying 4 plastic pudding cups to my stationary rack for humidity. So far it's holding at 61% humidity and hopefully it's less to maintain and the chicks can't drown if they surprise hatch on me. (I also like the reusable/throwaway aspect of the cups.)

I can add more racks with more cups if needed.

Best of luck to everyone...hope everyone's hatch is great!!!
