7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

I ended up hatching 33 of 38. But one died, so 32 of 38 is living. They are backyard mix. Buff Orpington rooster, Maran rooster, RIR rooster over hens that are Buff Orpington, Marans, Asian Blue, and White Leghorn.

Thanks to all of you for allowing me to follow this thread and post my hatch. Even though I was late setting my incubation, I finally finished. :)

excellent hatch. See u on the Easter hatch a long. $20 fine for setting late

To whom do you pay the $20?

Oh no! I hope he makes it after all the work you've put into him.

He is looking more proportional. I think at first I was surprised how big his beak was compared to the rest of him. It would tire me out carrying a beak like that when first hatched.
(Am I the only one who thinks such thoughts??)

The chicks that hatched on NYD are two weeks old now!

This is what I hatched for about $12 bucks--eggs from Trader Joe's and Whole Foods:

They were wondering what that thing was -- not a treat? And then snap!

Not yet, will look cute in about 2-3 weeks maybe

The parent's stopped feeding him so I've been hand feeding him for the last few days, and he is kinda weak, I think he got too cold. So he might not make it

Nooo! So, you have him in the house. Why did they stop feeding their baby?

The TJ's eggs were white and the Whole Foods eggs were Brown. They are likely that same cross with the parents reversed.

TJ's = Hyline leghorn hens x hyline brown roosters
Whole Foods = Hyline brown hens x hyline white roosters.

The theory is that the farm would use different colors between the cocks and the hens so that it would be easier to make sure you have the correct ratio for the breeding pens to ensure fertility.

It seems to be working because most of the eggs are fertile.

Because of the cross, most of the offspring will be brown egg layers. Of the 7 pullets that I hatched last year, 5 lay brown eggs and two lay white eggs.

I have one hen that lays a huger 78G white egg. She is very little too.
