7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

It's really sad, but I can NOT eat something I've raised...lol  I admire those of you that can.....  I eat chicken that I buy at the store, I just can't kill MY chickens.  It drives my family nuts.  Are there any others like me?  I have various feed stores that are willing to take my roo's.  I'm sure they eventually get sold for food, but I can't be the one killing them..

I've tried telling the family that any time I leave for the weekend, they can do what they want, but so far they haven't taken advantage.

Yes, there are lots. Sally has a thread for helping to get over it and process them.

*sigh*Fine, you can have a couple eggs- broody bum.

Gave her two from my incubator; don't know if I want to risk any more than that. She's young and has tried to go broody ever since she started laying, just a month ago. We'll see what happens tomorrow morning.

She was quite happy when I took the ceramic eggs away and put two real ones down- tucked them under and hunkered down on them

Update: still at it. She was up for a while to get food and went back to her box, scaring off the 8 week old chick from "her eggs"

incubatorwarehouse.com created them. IncuView incubator. Never used an incubator before, so I have hope!

Incubator warehouse is amazing!! It's like being a kid in a candy store.

Or at least that's how I feel...lol. And I haven't even bought anything yet!

I'm sure your hatch will go well. And then you'll get chicks...and be forever hooked.

It makes it easier if you take out the emotion. I killed one rooster myself within a few months. That was out of necessity. Then I just brought the roosters to the guy helping out a few weeks later when 4 extras were done. I never had a problem plucking. The big turnaround was last year when I went to butcher my turkeys. Someone had a set up (my tom was 47# live. Not easily doable here). I may not know how to clean yet, but I am totally ready to do it.

I think. No problem eating my turkeys. I bought them to eat. The chickens are now the same. I will eat them if I feel I need to get rid of some.

Ditto!

I am joining in! I put 6 painted silkie eggs into my incubator! Hopefully they are fertile! I will get my answer soon enough!

I can process and eat the chickens just fine. It is the actual killing that gets me. I get this horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach and walk around feeling miserable for days afterward. DH can't stand my "pity-party" as he calls it. So, now he does the culling and I process. Besides, the extra roos don't have much meat on them. They are too busy chasing "run-away" hens to eat much. So, culling them seems kinder than allowing them to starve themselves chasing hens that want nothing to do with them.
