8 x 12 Woods coop design - plan

Thanks for the comments. I did look at JackE's build quite a lot. I didn't copy the measurements but they end up about the same. Even though his is 16'. Howard Es too, but I purposefully worked from the book to paper drawing up a 10x16 first. Then modified to 8x12 with some design limits. So yeah, great minds..
Woods was brilliant!!

I haven't quite settled on the exact windows. So the framing will be modified for what I end up using. I have some old louvered trailer windows I am considering. 30x30 with a crank opening. For the monitor windows I'll be constructing my own, I have several old casement windows that I can work with.

I considered 2x6 for the floor. And I would go with that if it was being supported around the perimeter. I've built a couple of sheds, 8x12 & 10x16, on skids like this with 2x4 framing in the floor and they are pretty solid. A coop isn't going to have much weight in it besides the structure and a few lbs of chicken.

I am going to use 2x6 for the rafters in the back shed. The 9' span is too far for a 2x4. I may even use a double in the center like Howard. Plywood tar paper and propbably corrugated polycarbonate or metal roofing. Regular comp shingles are heavy.

I don't have snow load to consider. We rarely get temps below 25F, usually it's just barely 30 overnight. But it does get over 100 F in the summer. Those factors plus my site influenced my plan a bit.

I drew in nest boxes (6) and rough framed 2' square windows in the front today. No need or much room for another window. Maybe one in the door.

I'm still working on the design a bit. Can't wait to start building. I figured it was a good time to share for input, and there had been a few other posts about the basic plan recently. It can easily be scaled to many sizes and modified to use whatever materials you want.
I've even been wondering how it might work for a goat shed?

I am a total visual learner & your cad drawing sure helped me get the "big picture" - Thanks a million
Just curious how many Birds do you plan to keep in this house Cholland ?

You are welcome. I plan to draw a couple other sizes but need to finish mine first.
SketchUp is free and really easy. Even if you don't draw you can download and rotate the models around, etc.

Target is around 24 birds. I plan to use my old 4x8 shed coop as a brooder.

Hey there,

I'm new to BYC, but am interested in building a smaller sized woods style coop. Don't have any hens yet, but will likely max out 4-6 because of bylaws where I live. So even the 8x12 could be big.

Any suggestions on where I could start for dimensions/plans on a smaller build?

Thanks!

A 4x8 or 6x10 is possible. 4x8 would be small and might not have the same air cushion effect when the windows are closed.

Woods mentions a 6x10 in the book. It been a while since I've looked at it. I believe there is a thread on here where someone built a 6x10. You can scale the dimensions fairly easily.

For a 6x10 the rear shed would be 6x6 and the monitor beam 6' tall. Probably make the front wall about 3', and the rear shed wall about 3 1/2'. Maybe a few more inches?

There are electronic versions of the Woods book available. He discusses the ratios in there some. Take a look at Howard E's build, and JackE.

Also in this thread there is quite a bit of smaller Woods coop talk.

Edit to include another's thread on scaling down the Woods coop.

And a 6x10 version

Also framed and sheeted the back wall. No picture of that yet. Next build the front wall and the monitor beam. Hoping to get it all framed and at least the roof sheeted before next rain. At least I can tarp it and keep it mostly dry.
