I just looked them up. Are they flighty..I would imagine they can fly. Do you trim their wings? As you can tell, I don't know my ducks too well. :p

They fly REALLY well, lol...

400

Lady Grey's first flight...

But they imprint super easy and deep to people when hand raised... I only trim wings if the juvies get a bit carried away on their first flights... my last few batches have been exemplary about staying close and within the safe flight boundaries... :)

I love seeing all these pictures everyone! Makes me want to hatch out a bunch of chick babys...

But ahh...im having terrible luck with hatching! The beautiful little lone chick i hatched out died today......the cat has somehow figured to open the incubator and i figured he did something to the baby....heartbroken...

I thought i secured the incubator, but i went to it at least 30 mins ago and the lid was completely off and ALL the eggs were ice cold...all are dead expect one which is due to hatch soon...but that has a massive crack along the side, the cat learnt how to roll eggs...looks like i wont be having a new years hatch...darn cat.

Hate that so much for you...:(. Seems like animals can sense chicks even in the egg. Our Border Collie used to guard the incubator.

That's so sad!! One of the most frustrating parts of pet ownership is that we love them all - they just dont love each other (except in the way that satisfies hunger!) Darn instinct.

Those eggs are pretty. I have a pullet that should start laying some that color for me soon. And I love ducks! I just wish I had the room for them. I've hatched them, and they are so adorable. Have friends that have them and have seen how they are. One friend of mine had gotten some of those ducks that look like they are walking straight up...oh my goodness! I just started laughing. Here come these birds, walking a long straight up. The name is on the tip of my tongue. Help me out.
The only waterfowl I've hatched were Canada geese and I passed them on to the waterfowl rescue group.
However, last night I had a dream that I hatched 2 ducklings along with some chicks. What dominated the dream was how messy the ducklings were.

I'm not speaking of ducks but the term flighty in general, especially as it applies to chickens.
I don't know if the word flighty is sometimes misused or misunderstood or both.
People call the breed I raise flighty. They are crazy but they don't fly. They can fly but they just don't. They are very skittish and if in close quarters they'll try to burst through a wall to get away. If not pressed, they are content to stay inside a 3' fence and will only go over as a last resort. I've kept a flock of roosters inside a 2' fence. They're more likely to try and squeeze under it than go over unless they're crowded by a predator or human.

My son's cat discovered the incubator and was infatuated with it. She started scratching around the windows. Luckily she didn't break the lid but she did some noticeable damage. Are you positive the rest all died? Cool downs aren't necessarily a death sentence.
For the cracked egg, paint the crack with liquid skin bandage. I did that for 2 eggs this summer and was shocked they hatched. I dropped one half way through incubation and over half of the shell was covered in small cracks.
I've used beeswax and nail polish before but none of those hatched.
