These hats are cute! I have wished many times that I could put a winter hat and "wattle warmers" on my Buff Orpington rooster. He has some frostbite on his comb, poor guy.

Candled again this morning. My batch is due a bit before NYD because my shipped eggs arrived so much earlier than expected. So, the good news is that every one in the bator is still alive and kicking around! Of course, the bad news is that every last one of those shipped Bieles have terrible air sacks. I mean, terrible.

Can you see the one, principle sack, and then what looks like a secondary on the opposite side? But, the embryo was pretty busy in there, especially while I was trying to get the picture!

Awww, man!!! I was really hoping to see some JO babies!!!

If I were you, I'd be devastated! I'm gonna try again for the V-Day Hatch, as well!!! Hoping I'll have some fertile Ameraucana eggs by then!

Nah, It's okay. I have five girls and two roos so I'm pretty sure I will have fertile eggs in the spring if not sooner. I let one of the roos free range with my free range flock so the boys don't fight over the girls. I'm gonna try removing the roo from the JO breeding pen in a few days so when I put them back together maybe he will be more likely to breed. I'm also gonna try giving the a few extra hours of "daylight" when I put the JO roo back in the breeding pen. I might even give him a bit more protein to see if that helps.
I wonder if it would help to put the extra JO roo in the JO pen during the day to create a bit of competition between the boys.

I candled my Jubilee Orp eggs again and none of them are fertile. I'll try again for the Valentines day hatch.
For now, I'll just watch and cheer you all on.

I am so sorry! I hope the next batch is fertile.

12 chicks hatched and in the brooder. One egg left in the incubator. Made an emergency pip into the air cell. Turns out the chick didn't develop the double bend in the neck needed to break through the shell. Also means that it can't zip itself. Been going at it slowly all evening. Really hoping for a baker's dozen.
I hope it makes it!

Forgot to report... Candled Sunday night, and my daughters got to see dancing eyeballs in at least half the eggs! Aircells were looking good, too.

That is great news!

Just candled day 7. 4 without any signs of life. 1 with a firm blood ring.

14 left cooking. 4 serama's and 10 silkies still viable.

Thanks for the update! The chicks that hatch will be very cute

Watch them carefully when they get close to hatching. Sometimes they will pip into a vein with air cells like that.

Had to chase off a stray rooster again yesterday. My neighbor doesn't have an official coop and so lost most of his girls. His roosters are looking for a new harem. My poor cockerel keeps getting chased into the snow. Fixed the stray's wagon yesterday, though. I sicced my chihuahua on him. He had a grand time chasing the rooster through the field back to the neighbor's house.
