9 month old pullet - prolapsed vent

Just tried the honey, everything stayed put for about 5 minutes, then out everything popped. Cleaned her up, clipped her feathers from her butt and slathered her in honey and put her back in her cage for the night. Figuring if I left her alone and quiet, everything might stay put. I am running out of ideas....

Yes, the prolapse needs to go back in but doesn't always do it readily. Believe it or not, the honey (or sugar if you want to try that) helps limit bacterial growth as well as shrinking a prolapse, so at least it's a helpful treatment in that aspect. If putting it back in isn't working, try letting her body work on it itself by keeping her segregated, quiet, and dark. The biggest thing is to keep the prolapsed tissues clean. Wash with warm water and/or diluted iodine solution to keep clean until it retracts.

Good Morning. Day 3! Peep is the same. However, the tissue around the vent is caked with poop and it is extremely hard to get off. I tried soaking the area with warm water on a towel and letting water dribble onto it. Didn't seem to do much good. I had used the honey twice yesterday and it didn't seem to make much of a difference, so slathered her with prep h to help keep the area as moist as I could. I am not sure how to clean her as I am afraid that I will tear tissues and then she will bleed. I did cut feathers short on her behind. She is no longer laying, hasn't laid for 2 days and I am keeping her quiet, warm, dark and away from the other birds in her own little home in our basement/cellar. I have heard pros and cons on bathing her to get the poop off her, but this is pretty well caked on, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd bathe it in plain warm water. It'll get it off hopefully and it's just water, no harm. Then just keep it moist. I think in a couple more days, if theres no change, you should put her back. the body can sort it out itself. Ofcourse keep it clean and moist but, bodies naturally sort it out. You don't want her getting depressed alone.

Been trying to find a vet who would see Peep. Do you know, I can't even find a vet within 100 miles who takes care of chickens?

I just lost my girl today. She was in ICU in the garage for nearly a month.

I had first noticed that she was lethargic, so I brought her in. That's when I discovered the prolapse. She stayed in a covered crate in the garage, with feed and water. She drank readily, but wouldn't eat. She was bathed, honeyed, and Preperation H'ed. On her own, she would eat what stink bugs she could find during her free range garage time, meal worms, crickets, finely chopped pears and hot dogs. She had even nibbled on available grass on the few occasions she was let outside, weather permitting. She had to be force fed grit and softened pellets with yogurt. It took at least two weeks for the prolapse to go back in. She hadn't produced an egg during the entire time in ICU, and had dropped a tremendous amount of weight.

Last night, she was out for her free range garage time. She nibbled on some chopped apple and pear and hot dog, and drank.

She was sleeping, I think, when I left for work at 5:15 this morning. My mother called early in the afternoon to tell me that she was laying with her head down, and wouldn't leave the crate. When I got home at 5 this afternoon, she was gone.

Even though the prolapse had gone back in, I don't know what may have been going on inside. I would think that maybe she was eggbound, and infection prevailed. I just don't know.

I don't mean to hijack this thread. I'm just saying that sometimes poop happens, and they don't make it.

Update on Peep.

Thanks to all for your responses, concern, etc., On January 11th Peep was euthanized. It was a sad day in our household.

I'm sorry...

i was reading this thread because I'm in the same situation with my 7 month old cochin. I got the egg out okay, but the prolapse is still there. I had hope until I read that you had to euthanize your Peep. I'm so sad for you, and so sad/afraid that I will have to do that for mine. I'm obviously going to give it some time, but I hope to have a different outcome.

but so sorry for your loss.
