A BEE thread....for those interested in beekeeping.

I would read the "Confessions of a Bad Beekeeper" by Bill Turnbull. You will learn a lot of things not to do. Its also very entertaining.

We have a brand new beekeeping section on BYH!

Thanks everyone who provided input and helped us design it. Now let's get some content in there!

Does anybody want to share their overwintering techniques for their bees? Especially in the cold, northern states? This is our first year with bees and we are going to attempt to overwinter them, but I heard the survival rate here is only 50% (last year was only 30%).

What we have done so far is:

--- Started feeding 1:1 sugar:water a few weeks ago
--- Put the entrance reducer back in to keep wasps from robbing (also put out wasp (not bee) traps)
--- Put a plastic garden fence around the hive as a windbreak
