A Bielefelder Thread !

Not sure what "standard" breed you are referring to, but my Bielefelders lay better than any other heavy breed chickens (rir, br, barnies, del.) that I have raised if you consider, size of egg, quantity of eggs, and behavior. Not to mention they seem to be a better meat bird than most other standard breeds.
By standard I guess I really meant common. RIR, Leghorn, BR etc. I was mainly curious about the quantity comparison. Thanks

I have no eggs yet. WOW can these birds eat! I am trying a higher protein feed. My pullet is VERY food aggressive and that tells me she needs more protein. I picked up 24% chick starter, will feed a week and then dilute it. The roo is just a doll, really isn't worried about anything, (just pick me up!) She is scarfing up the oyster shell like its candy too... Sooo maybe (?) they are close to breeding and laying.
I have 4 Jaerhon hens and a roo with them, young also since all are normally docile. The roo is too young, passive and docile to to breed but they will get separated pens when I start to see eggs.

I didn't find mine to eat tons more than my other breeds. I do free range they are pretty good at free ranging. Mine just started laying for a month maybe. I getting 4 to 6 eggs per hen a week. Some of my eggs are jumbo I showed it to a friend they thought its a triple yoker. It's the on in the pic from last week. Has anyone had a double yoker I want to hatch it but don't want to if it a double yoker. Pam

I do free range most of my birds. Since they are still in "jail," aka quarantine they will get to be free after the 45 days or so. Come breeding time I lock up the breeds so my eggs are true, and wait a month to hatch.

I rotate my different breeds half a day for each breed. So this way no mixed breeds. And both are getting sun, exercise, bugs, etc. Pam

Can you candle it? Then you would know how many yoke's it has.

Quote: I have a large mixed breed "egg flock" here that is free range 24/7 so if I want breeds pure, they have to be penned. Indiana decided to rezone and change ordinances in many cities the last 2 years. I take in a lot of birds that need homes, fast. I rehome to families that can have chickens legally, many are less fortunate and can't afford to raise them from chicks. Its not a profit thing, I just want to help folks be more self sustainable and don't charge them for the birds. I donate extra eggs to our food bank too, and hatching eggs to school and park hatching programs. I do rotate my duck and geese free range time during hatch season to keep those breeds pure also.

Quote: That's what I do, new layers will sure have "oops" and double yolks are one of them. Its rare to hatch one, most of the chicks drown. I had a triple in a very odd goose egg. It weighed 6.76 oz, had 3 yolk 2 white and an egg inside the egg with white only. This was from an Embden hen. I just had to try to hatch it! But no luck.

far right I think is the egg. used a bungee strap to hold it to the bator shelf, but pulled it after 7 days, (no veins). this was left to right... a chicken, turkey, duck, goose and the HUGE goose egg in the picture.

I loose my last 4 months pullet few days ago. My only choice now is cross Bielefelder rooster with 3 available Cream Legbar. Will see how they are turn out.
