A Bielefelder Thread !

Pics
Beter pic of male would be nice
I have three males. He is more grey than the other two.

He is not very photogenic. ;)

This is another one. He doesn't seem quite as light in person.

This is the third male. He is lighter in person. But, he has more of a stripe on his back than the others.

I am thinking that the second one is more likely to be a good male to breed, but I don't really intend to do anything more than breed these for my backyard.

I am curious, though. The breeder has 2 males and 7 females. Will I be able to breed these for a while without getting in new blood? Or should I get some new blood right away?

All Bielefelder are from the same gene pool from Greenfire. So at some point we will all need a new line. Greenfire historically brings in new lines periodically. You should be good for a while as long as you cull for defects. Everyone once in a while you may want to purchase some directly from Greenfire to go back to the original source. But if you do, keep track of which ones are the originals.

Just saying...up here in Canada, I got my eggs from a combined breeding from Greenfire's line & another European import. Seen these birds when picking up my eggs in person. Big, gorgeous birds! :D The breeder & I noted that the European birds have that nice, solid, rectangular shape to them. :) I can't wait for mine to hatch...long way to go yet. Day 3 today. :p

Good information to know. I have all of them banded so that I can keep track of them. I've not done that before.

I know that I will breed some of them with my cream legbars to make green eggs, but I also want to breed bielefelder with bielefelder.

I'll try to post pics of my females later on. There is one that is quite a bit lighter in color than the others, but she still has a clear chipmunk stripe.

Take the time to learn to sex by eyeliner. Females should have clear distinct eyeliners. Males should have it broken or fuzzy. This is caused by the single and double barring. Sometimes the chipmunk stripe is really hard to tell.

In theory, crossing a Legbar roo with a Bielefelder hen should produce a nice green egg. I am thinking about doing the same cross. It should also maintain the autosexing. But I need to verify that with actual hatches. In theory, you can take any -bar autosexing breed and the offspring should retain the autosexing genes. The one exception would be the Isbar, because the blue color messes that up.

Please do tell. We have Bielefelders, Cream Legbars, Silver Sussex and Isbars. Our Isbars are not laying yet but should be soon and we hope to hatch some chicks this summer. I figured Isbars were going to be straight run for us. I have read that the Isbars were intended to be auto sexing but not completed. We have no idea what to expect from the Isbars or any of the possible crosses we may do with them. (we are new at this and trying to learn)

Isabars are an Autosexing project breed that could not be completed, they are missing the sexlinks and autosexing Barred gene, so they dont produce autosexing chicks...BUT you can create Blue Autosexable chicks(sexlinks so sexable at hatch) that will lay blue eggs if you cross an Blue Isbar rooster to a Cream Legbar hens, The Chicks will look like this.. source https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/642434/take-your-pick-mix-and-match-buy-it-now-prices

now if you Want to take this project(Isbars) and Finish them up and make them Full Autosexing, I can help you with a breeding plan.. all you would need is Cream Legbars and Isbars..

Quote: Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! I fell in love with the blue birds when we had a couple of Blue Andalusian hens for a while. That is what led me to get the Isbars as the Andalusian hens were rather unproductive at laying smallish white eggs. Funny thing is I have been telling my wife (since the day we got the Andalusians) how I would love to have a blue chicken that lays a blue egg. So that will be sexlinks created with the Blue Isbar (ours is blue!) rooster over Cream Legbar hens.
Now this breeding plan you so graciously offer. What would the end results look like and what color would they lay? I am very interested in this for sure. From my research the Isbars we have here in the states may have questionable or poor genetics. So adding new genetics seems like a good idea, with the plus of auto sexing that would be spectacular.

The End Result will be Barred BBS(blue/black/splash) Isbars that are Autosexing, and that will lay blue eggs so whats the breeding plan? Lebar rooster over Isbar hens, this will produce all barred birds(could be autosexed, males will have larger headspots) save the blue barred pullets, take this pullets and mate them back to unrelated Blue isbar rooster, this will create Sexlinks, again easy to sex at hatch, the pullets will lack headspot and the males will have headspot. take the most Isbar looking male and mate him with the most isbar looking barred female you produce on the F1s and this will produce 50% double barred males and 50% barred females that will look like pure Isbars except with Barring, OR.. you can keep both lines(Blue isbars and Cream Legbars) cross the Isbar male with CL females to produce Sex linked Blue eggers, you can sell them at such(hatching eggs) these chicks will be sexable at hatch, but will not be sexable if cross to each other, so Super Blue Sex Link eggers would be their name
