A Bielefelder Thread !

I am getting a pile of eggs and eggs are in the incubator. So if you live close and want to talk about getting a few let me know? I don't think I am shipping this year.

Hello Bielefelder friends!

I finally have photos of the 7 chicks that hatched yesterday. They are all from my Bielefelder roo, Kaiser. He is a precocious 19 weeks old.

The hens are: Bielefelder, Buff Orpington, Silver Lace Wyandotte, and Black Australorp.

I think that these three are the Bielefelder Black Australorp crosses. Based on coloration and also the eggshells. Do you think that the white head spot means they are males?

This one is definitely from my Buff Orpington! She also hatched from the smallest egg, which is the one from Buffy. She has a small dark spot on her head.

I think that these two are from my Silver Lace Wyandottes. They have the chipmunk stripes, are grey with a hint of warmer color on their undersides. Any thoughts about sex?

Possible Beile/Beile??? The egg didn't seem to be large enough.

Awwww....so cute! I don't know about the rest of them, but in my experience it's impossible to sex the Biel/Aussie mixes when chicks. Head spots didn't seem to make any difference with my crosses.

Quote: Such cute babies. I had 10 hatch on Friday. They look like the Biel/Black Australorp here. Mine are Marans Hens and either Bielefelder or Cream Legbar Roo. Everyone of them have a white spot. I was hoping that the blacker chicks were pullets and the grayer ones were cockerels like Cuckoo Marans. I will have to wait and see. Yours are so so cute!

Yours are totally cute! They look exactly like mine. Are they Black Copper Marans? I wonder how they relate to the Australorp?
Mine also have faint chipmunk striping, but you have to look very closely to see it. @DesertChic posted that her experience is the head spot doesn't indicate sex in the Austalorp/Biele mix. I am curious if the 2 wyandotte mixes are females because of the striping. And I don't know what to make of the Buff Orp mix. It has a dark head spot and very, very faint chipmunk stripes!

This is the first time I've been able to hatch our own eggs, and it is fascinating!

For those of you using a Biele Roo, ALL of you chicks will have a single copy of barring so they will all have headspots, the headspot as an indicator of sex in a mix only works if the hen is barred and the roo is not. However if Bieles are based on gold then putting them over a SLW will have sexlinked chicks with the males being silver and the females being gold

Waaaay back in this thread there was a translation and a link to one in English.

I have my first fertility test hatch in the incubator now. I have 1 rooster and two pullets.
I hope it goes well!! Let me know if you want more eggs in the future, I think my Bieles will mature before my Ams so I should be able to get a few batches of pure eggs later in the summer. (I can even separate out the Ams to make sure.)

My pretty Bieles are in their second juvie molt. They are 18 weeks old now. Hopefully they'll start laying in the next month or so, haha. Love them.

Does anyone know if the brighter red edging on the girl in the first pic is more to the standard than the all over even coloring of the 4th pic?

Quote: Congrats on your first hatch! Well done! My eggs were from Black Copper, Blue and Black Marans Hens. I see the chipmunk striping too, very faintly in the right light. These are my second batch from a broody hen. The first batch were under two hens and that did not work out well. They hatched the eggs and then were terrible mothers. They went into a scratching frenzy killing three chicks so I took them away from them and gave them to a neighbor. I haven't incubated any eggs yet. That is next on the agenda. Love your pictures!
