A Bielefelder Thread !

I got my pair of Bielefelders yesterday. They are HUGE!! The roosters name is Archie and he is a sweet heart! The hen is Edith and she has a wound on her foot I put some Blue Kote on it and she was favoring it today

Congratulations!

A wound? On the bottom of the foot, or elsewhere? I hope it's not bumblefoot.
Yeah, that's the first thing I thought of, bumblefoot. I've never had (knock wood!!!) a case in my Biels but in my splash Marans, she came with a suspicious looking sore on the top of her foot. I soaked it in epsom salts, put some Vetrx on it, tried to wrap it to keep it clean and dry (THAT was a job and NOT successful). I only did that for three or four day then I gave up. Long story short - it was not bumblefoot (that being on the bottom of the foot and two years later she's still here, happy, healthy, and quite loving (I think that is from her being treated so much when I first got her).

Google bumblefoot and you will see various treatments (most of them surgical) and more info on it. Fingers and toes crossed that it is a simple sore!!!!

Oh and ditto on the congrats - you will LOVE the breed!!!

It's almost on the side of the ankle. I think she scraped it in the cage.
That's great to hear! I'd just keep it clean, maybe keep her in a large wire dog crate for a few days (up on sawhorses so she's not in the dirt) and give her a chance to recoup. Let us know how it goes!

Today I did let her roam in the coop as she was cooped up in a small cage with other birds all night. I think when i get home i will separate her and put some more Blue Kote on again. I will take some pictures when I get home

I had a Barred Rock with a huge gash in the side of her foot, nearly the full length of her outer toe and up half of her shank. All I did was clean it out with peroxide and spray it with Blue Kote and she heeled up just fine. I didn't have to isolate her because she was in the middle of a heavy molt and did a very good job of hiding away from the other chickens, coming out only when I entered the coop to "protect" her and offer her food.
