A Bielefelder Thread !

Anyone have there bielefelder hens go broody?! I keep having one a week trying to! I'm tired of having to separate them so I guess I might as well let them hatch some and see how they do. Any thoughts?

I have been wanting and waiting on one of mine too. I would suspect they would be great Mothers by their wonderful disposition. Please post more if you let them go broody. I would be very interested in the results.

How is the self sufficiency level of this breed???? I do not have any at this time, Of the chickens that i do have, some can survive without me if it came to that….smart, resourceful & protective. Others would have a hard go of it if the feeders were not around.

As far as being smart and resourceful the flock of Bielefelders that I have do well. They free range on a 1/4 acre that I have fenced in and eat well on bugs, worms, and grass. The time they stay in the coop they eat very little even though they have a supply of crushed corn to scratch through as well as laying pellets. My Rooster is very alert and attentive and he will sound the alarm if something is around but I would not consider him a super aggressive rooster. My birds are not really in a dangerous setting so for that reason I cant really say how protective they are. I do admire how he tends to his girls bringing them worms and other things. Love my Bielefelders especially their tasty eggs.

Hi -- I'm new here, but I'm fairly experienced with poultry. (I got out of breeding for awhile due to illness.)

I'm seriously considering buying bielefelders. We only have room for one breed, so I'm trying to get something that is truly dual purpose AND mellow enough that I don't need to worry about visitors or our meter reader (!) being attacked by cranky roosters.

We currently have a flock of hatchery "orpingtons" with a bad tendency towards attitude, plus some other undesirable genetic traits and small size.

Is there anyone in Arizona with eggs? (Or S. Utah, E. New Mexico, etc.) I have two orp hens who have decided to go broody and I might as well put them to work. I'm about an hour NE of Payson, but I do not mind a long drive if I can get day old eggs. I'll pay a fair amount. :) I'm looking at this as an investment in a line of poultry that should serve me well for many years to come.

Also, how do they dress out and what is the meat quality? We generally just eat extra roosters as there's not a huge market for chickens up here. I've had large breeds before where they put on lots of meat, but the meat is extremely tough even from a very early age, like "bend a fork" tough. I do want decent meat quality, if at all possible.

I am a huge fan of the Bielefelder. The hens are excellent large egg layers and the Roosters make great table birds. They make big Roosters! There has been absolutely no problem with aggressive behavior. To me this is the perfect chicken for our family to have...easy keepers!!

Sorry. I meant chicks.
