A Bielefelder Thread !

DD wanted to make a crayon melt for an art project. She thought it looked like a crying rainbow - which then reminded her of the "Rainbow Bridge" poem. So she turned her canvas into a memorial for our beloved Cuddles. I still miss my sweet Cuddles, but I'm proud of my compassionate little artist. I doubt the judges will understand, but I know some people on this thread will.

Thanks! I hope you are right, I'd love to have one of each!
Fingers crossed, but it looks pretty good to me! I bought 2 day old chicks last year, and this year I hatched 1 of each, but the coon got the female chick, so now I have one frisky roo who is 22 weeks old, and 2 year old hens. The roo has been a papa to 11 chicks hatched within the last 4 weeks. I sold 4 of the mixed chicks, and kept 7, of which I have 4 definite pullets. It is so much fun to know that I can hatch my own chicks. It will be interesting to see how the mixes do. The hens are not doing well with the heat, and the roo is only slightly better.

Does it get hot where you are?

Hello, Hello, Hello to all!

Somehow I got booted off the list and have TOTALLY missed out on all the Biels news - what a chicken poop! But hopefully I'm back on so I can enjoy everyone's input.

Speaking of which, I need some advice. I just hatched my first two Biel chicks yesterday. While one is most obviously a male, the darker one I'm hoping is a hen. But, and this is a big BUT, she/he does have a smidge of white on the head as you can see in the photos. They are less than 20 hours at the time of photo. It is possible that the father is a Cream Legbar instead of a Biel.

Any ideas as to gender??????

THANKS and it's so good to be back!!!

One girl..... one boy. No doubt.

I got the chance to show off my Biels today to a young man and his mother who came out to buy hatching eggs. He actually wants to focus on NN Turkens, but both of them were incredibly impressed with how big and docile my Biel roosters are. My husband carried my largest boy, Hansel, around like a puppy, much to the amusement and astonishment of our guests. I do so love this breed, and as always I so wish they could tolerate the heat better.

And someone living in the right climate. I would love to explore a project like this, but the Biels really struggle in the desert heat here. That's the primary reason I've resorted to crossing them with more heat tolerant birds, and hope to eventually have created a heat tolerant Biel.

I talked with @GaryDean26 who stated that his smaller birds tolerated TX heat better than his heavier breeds that were dropping dead in 112o temps. I had mentioned that large combed chickens supposedly tolerated heat better than pea or rose-combed breeds but he seemed to think the lighter-weight of the chicken being able to tolerate heat was more evident than anything to do with comb size. Seems like creating heat-tolerant Bielies would do better if they went on a diet or were in a breeding program to raise smaller birds? NN's are so cute. Good luck with your breeding project! I love following your posts.

A big YES to hot! The good thing is that it only lasts a couple of months and normally tops out in the mid-90's. We put a mister out in the shaded yard and the crew has a lot of fun dancing around underneath the six sprays!

We have been at 100 with 100% humidity. Very hard on everyone! I want misters!
