I love my dogs.
I'd be totally freaked out if someone was camping in MY yard (I guess that's a literal use of NIMBY...).
We have a lot of "travellers" here in Humboldt. I can tell who really could use help, and who just needs beer money. Heck, some carry signs saying they need beer/pot money. It's easy to become jaded after being repeatedly hit up for cash by people who are obviously capable of working, but choose not to.
We've actually seen adults take turns on a corner with kids...The kids stay on the corner all day, but the adults switch off! How messed up is THAT?!
Obviously, the mentally ill need help, but beyond giving a few dollars, I am not qualified to do much more. We have a HUGE failure in that department. Our county has 6 (yes, COUNTY and 6) beds in our mental health facility. One can't get in unless one is imminently a threat to oneself or others. Everyone looks the other way when the muttering ill people go by with their belongings piled into shopping carts. IMO, it's the fault of our local, state, and federal gov'ts for not being able to help these people. No, I'm not "passing the buck", like I said, I do what I can when I can, but I'm not very well-off financially, and as I said, not qualified. The churches do what they can, but it's never enough.
