A BYC CHANGE OVER REALITY. All need to read.

I believe that there are a lot of thing that may have to change if BYC wants to continue being the "largest" poultry forum on the net

Also keep in mind that the reason BYC is, and continues to be the largest and fastest growing poultry site on the net is because we change and evolve over time.

... oh, and because we have the bestest moderators and members in the world.

ok, I uninstalled and then reinstalled my java programs, and took off ALL of my IE addons.

I now have drop downs! IS that cool or what?

(Didya see that What's Kicking?Chicken? check your IE addons and DELETE them, it may help)

HEY! ONE TRY!

The site is still a little slow, but not terribly so. I have however had the chance to actually see the site now.

I think I can deal with the changes. Of course, there are a few things I dont like, but there were a few things I didnt like about the old platform, so thats a wash for me.

There's a lot of fluff on this site that I'll never use. But, theres alot of fluff everywhere that I never use, I jsut work around it, so thats a wash for me as well.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the pic storage, but it's free storage, and I dont whine about free stuff. I can use photobucket for private online storage. So, thats a wash as well, lol.

I love the way the PMs are done now. It's nice to just scroll up when I have no clue what someone is talking about (and I am clueless quite frequently).

I REALLY love the ignore feature. If you annoy me, I can ignore you. That give me control.......and I like being in control.

I lurk on this site mostly, but read the info and the coop designs. I am having a hard time finding things right now, and that is a little frustrating, but then again, I am always "lost" and homesick in a new place until I learn my way around.

Yeah, I dont like change, but I am ornery and stubborn so I will survive and possibly even thrive.

It's like my new barn boots. I'm not crazy about them right now. They feel funny on my toes and I miss my old ones......the ones that had holes in them, the ones with poop stains and blood stains and a permanent reeking ODOR and desparately needed replacing. But I wear the new ones cuz I needed them, and every day they get a little more stench and a little more comfy.

It's good when something new gets all comfy and stinky. lol

I want to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff for all the hard work that was done.

I used to be the sole moderator / Admin at a moderately sized forum myself. Not the size of BYC, but we had well over a thousand users, so it was tricky with only one mod. It is easy for the users to lose sight of all the work that goes on in the background; of sleepless nights spent trying to fix things, working on a forum that was starting to come apart at the seams, moderate posts, clean up spam, and appease users and disagreements. Not to mention the stress! And when we migrated to a new platform just to keep the forum working at all, you'd think that everyone's life was in peril based on the negative reactions. I can relate.

This migration has gone remarkably smoothly for your large userbase and database sizes! This was obviously well researched, tested and carefully thought out. As a user-- yeah-- there's stuff I don't necessarily like, but that's part of the territory and I'll get used to it in no time. Don't worry about that. Your work is commendable!!

So, well done all!

Thanks for the nice note! One of the biggest consolations I receive is from people who have "walked a mile in my shoes"... those are the ones that really do understand the complexities of what we do.

For example, only people with experience running a website with thousands of active members and millions of pageviews a month really understands how difficult hardware management, software tweaking, and overall website hosting can be. It's frustrating hearing people say, "What's the big deal? Just get a $50 a month unlimited hosting plan with xxxyyy Hosting Co. and some free software and you can run a huge forum."

In the same way, it's often the case that the peeps that really understand community management and the transition of a huge forum are those that have done both.

I was incorrect when I made that statement earlier. Our photos are public now. I'm sorry for giving misinformation. Please don't hurt me.

To be clear: Your pictures converted from the old site are NOT public unless you explicity change them to be made public.

BrattishTaz, I just went to your profile via a GFM account and could not see anything else besides your avatar album.

A quick thought on perspective:

Kstavin has mentioned how upset people were when we converted from the really old system we were on 6 years ago to the system we were on over the last 5 years. Well, wrap your heads around this:

I can guarantee that if in 1 month... just 30 days, if we were to post: "Sorry, we made a mistake, we're going back to the old platform." and then made the change

PEOPLE WOULD FREAK OUT!

Not a little bit of freaking... we're talking END OF THE YEAR MYAN CALENDAR kinda freaking out!

So, take the BYC challenge! Use the new system for 30 days and we'll see what % of the members would like to go back to the way things were... including limited upload space, limited PM space, etc.

Just thought it was some interesting perspective.

So, who's going to take the BYC Challenge?
