A BYC CHANGE OVER REALITY. All need to read.

My husband and I were talking on Tuesday when the site was down and so many were getting impatient and thinking it should be back up a lot faster than it was. I was giving him a synopsis of the situation. He made a great point. He asked me, "Are they paying for this forum?" I told him we were not. That we could buy memberships for certain privileges, but the forum was free. He then said, "If anyone realized how much it costs to run a forum that size, even one that has ad-support, and how much it cost to have people change it over, they would probably complain a little less. It isn't free. It isn't cheap. And someone is paying for it.

Tell your husband he's my new best friend!

I haven't met a single person who has managed a large website with the kind of diversity and volume that we have here, who has said: "Wow, you guys are making some really big mistakes!"... and trust me, the guys and girls I know that run really big sites would have not problem telling us we're screwing up.

When you go too far too fast and too much in the corporate top-down style you will lose the people who have made the community what it is.

Consider. Think.

Remember that chickens DO NOT LIKE CHANGE.

PS:

I _do_ notice that the pages are loading more rapidly in the past couple of hours. I don't know if that's rural connection or a recent bug-fix.

That's the same type of tone and comment that people made 5 years ago. "You're making a terrible mistake!" "You failed to consider xxx yy!!!" "This is going to be the end of BYC!" "BYC will never be the same!!!"

Well, that was about 113,271 members ago.

This isn't our first rodeo, but if anybody has as much experience with running a community half our size, and wants to lend their experience, we're more than willing to hear it. That isn't to say we aren't listening to everyone, but if we headed every person who said, "You don't know what you're doing" then BYC wouldn't have even made it to the last platform we were on.

So, we'll keep listening to everyone, but at the end of the day our team collectively love this community more than anybody and will do what we know is best for the long-term strength and growth of our wonderful family.

I'm an assistant manager of a dog related forum, that is MUCH smaller than this one. And it's really upsetting when you spend time doing something for the group, and people are so ungrateful. Change is hard, but there are a lot of benefits in the long run. I love BYC, and to top it off, I found my lovely trio of Silkies through this site.

Thanks guys for all you do!

No chickens do not and neither do some people but we manage to adjust. It was frustrating at first but after a few hours you realize it's the same stuff just in different spots. I figure I am a guest here (even if I pay) and can like it or leave it....but it has changed and won't be unchanged till it gets too big again in a few years. There are quite a few neat new things that make it even better than before...once you get used to it.

I am having sooo much fun exploring the new BYC. Yep I found the settings for home notification.... check. Yep I found the pictures and changed my avatar.... check. Found one broken link and notified through what ever button there was.... I can handle the Adds and such No probs with that For what its worth I find they less intrusive than many many other websites I have been on ..... Good Job on that BYC techies.... My first computer was an 8088 that I built myself.... My tinkering and programming days went away when Windows became the platform of choice.

I have only one concern its not a complaint because I have handled it on my end. But I have already been spammed by a vendor selling wire through the PM system. If you need more info I have the PM in its own folder. Which I love being able to do folders by the way.

Thats just about it. If I have concerns usually I figure them out.

It was definately time for a change. My only concern right now (I just realized it, even after I started typing this) is that I can't right click for spell check!
By the way, I love the search feature. The one on the other forum was terrible.

Use Ctrl when you right click and it'll work.

Well I'm still having trouble finding everything... But I've got the site on column view in my phone. It kinda makes everything stacked on top of everything else. But I can now post in threads. I also found the new posts and am able to enjoy reading endlessly about chickens. If I can do it on this old phone... Everybody else shouldn't be having a problem with desk top computers. :)
Can't wait to really enjoy the site when I get my new droid!
And I'm glad its all free! But I still want a GFM someday ;)

Okay, big apologies if this has been gone through before, but I have to ask -

Will there be any changes in the future to the Auction system/layout? I kinda miss seeing an actual working Auction system with bid history, starting bid, current bid, shipping price, seller feedback, etc etc. I miss having a, umm, "normal" Auction layout.
