A BYC CHANGE OVER REALITY. All need to read.

After reading all the negative gab on the other thread, I must say this is a bit of a balm: Thanks to the folks who put this together. This change was needed and it is appreciated.

The internet is not like a hard line telephone. It's necessary for the users to keep up w/ the current tech. It is intrinsic to a well-functioning web.

And hat's off to those who point out that it's the community that makes a forum.

While I like some of the features and COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND the need for downtime and a move to new servers as the site grows, I believe the site administrators should have considered a couple of things:

1) Many folks who have chickens live in rural areas with slow or intermittent connections
2) Many peeps who have chickens in our lives want to live more simply and NOT have to spend a lot of time and/or money upgrading our computers and/or software to accomodate other people's technological whims.
3) Not everyone at this site is from the US, Canada or Australia. I've viewed posts from peeps in Mexico, China etc. Not everyone in, say, Mexico, has high-speed internet....
4) The new site is not W3C compliant for universal access. (or isn't labeled as such) This should have been considered as I find that W3C-labeled sites almost always load VERY fast and are very stable. I believe strongly in the W3C universal access concept.

Thus, I believe that the site should have been migrated to new and better servers but with a similar interface to the old site. Keep the number of scripts etc. down so the pages load fast even with a slow connection and an older computer.

The sheer amount of javascript is making this site run slo-o-o-w on my _Pentium 4_ laptop and I ain't about to go out and buy a new machine!!!!

As it is in this down economy I'm trying to live a bit more plainly and learn some of the skills that folks had before there WERE computers....

Those items were very much part of the consideration of changing platforms. Again, this wasn't a decision that was taken lightly.

I have IE9 too and I didn't have the drop down menus either until 15-20 minutes ago! I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Then I noticed up on my browser taskbar the 'Compatability view' clicky and I clicked it...now I can see the drop down menus.

I am hoping this helps with the rest of the browsing issues I had and helps with some of the problems you are having as well too. There are still some things I don't really like but the rest is starting to get better....browsing earlier today was sure a shock though!

maybe someone can give me directions to the "new" house tomorrow

I understand your frustration and I appreciate everyone who worked so hard to make it like this. But the new layout is just a little complex; I don't like how my photo albums can be seen by people other than mods/admins for example. Not being able to type smilies, having to dig through posts, etc is also kind of troublesome. But I'll get used to it; and soon everyone will probably be loving it or at least tolerating it.

You're welcome,

and no you're not alone, a lot of people were having trouble finding things today. It was the big brown tabs that weren't working for me either until I clicked the compatibility view in my browser's tools on my taskbar and now they do work. (see if your browser has that too) Then I stepped away for a bit, made dinner, played with my grandbaby for awhile then came back. Clearer thinking and I'm starting to find things that I couldn't find earlier. Hope this helps :)

I just looked for your photos and they are not visible. The album gives you a "Make public" option, if you do not click that then your pre-changeover pictures will remain private.

Pics uploaded after the changeover will be automatically become public.

I'm on a forum a lot like this, so I was already used to most of the features. Like Nifty said; 'Sure, you will notice some differences like the kitchen light switch used to be on the left, but now it's on the right, but it's all for the better.'
It's a bit slower and not as good on my iPod, but I got a laptop for christmas, so I'm fine! :D

I still stand by what I have said. I don't like the change but I can put up with it. What I have no use for is requiring people to pay for basic functions like changing the post per page setting an removing that sidebar so I can see the forum in the whole screen.

Keep in mind there are different sides to this. We could go the Facebook route and not allow any customizations at all.

When was the last time FB said, "Sure, we'll let you turn off all the ads for a whole year for the same cost as dinner and a movie." ?

Instead of looking at it as "Why can't everybody have everything!" perhaps it could be viewed as "Wow, I have the option to change things that I usually wouldn't have the opportunity to change!"

A lot of other chicken websites, forums, etc. have dropped off over the years because they didn't have a sustainable system and model. We're on our 12th year, so hopefully that accounts for something.
