A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I had a guy last night call and want to bring a bird back that turned out to be a rooster. He did not want it to go to someone that would eat it.

I told him he could bring it back, but I would just wring it's neck and throw it in the garbage. He wanted to buy another. I was honest and said I can't bring hm back into my flock once he leaves.

I just don't tell them what I am going to do with them but I do not return birds to my flock after they have lived somewhere else.

I gave 2 broodies a bunch of eggs, (turns out it was about 21 days ago). One of them would vacate her nest, sit on the wrong nest and to dumb things. I would move her back to her nest. One night the eggs were ice cold in that 15 degree weather. The other hen never left her nest that I know of. I had to check daily to see if there were other eggs under than and pull them out. Seems even if I have 12 nest to pick from only 2 are fit for most hens to lay in........ Last night I went to check under the hens and one had a chick! The one that would abandon her nest. She also had a new egg there. The other one, that never left her nest, had a dead chick. They both had quite a few eggs under them. This morning the one that never left her nest has some shells and three whole eggs. She tried to remove my hand at the wrist when I lifted her. The other one has this: Now I need to figure out where to put her and her babies.
Do you think some of the chicks from the mama with empty shells migrated to this mama?

they would have to be able to fly to do that. There is a divider between them and they are 3 ft off the ground.....Of course, Yoki's are little ninjas so maybe...

THEY ARE LITTLE NINJAS! MINE ARE NOT ABLE TO LEAVE A COVERED CAGE! And yet they still fly at the top to try get away from me!

Hello you turkey experts.
I'm hoping you can give me some feedback.
My 4 hens have just started laying for the first time.
Its been between 1 to 3 weeks
I want to incubate some of their eggs.
How long should I wait?
Do their eggs get bigger fairly quick?
I have two jakes, they all turn 1 on the 24th.

Thanks
Debbie

Welcome maggiemaysmom. Usually the first eggs a hen lays are infertile. But if they have have been laying a couple weeks and they are with they Jakes set some. You can store eggs up to 14 days before you set them so you don't have a staggered hatch. Most all my heritage hens if you leave eggs in the nest will go broody.
What type of turkeys do you have?

Memphis: still working on narri hen. Have 21 narri eggs cooking.

Ralphie: Congrats on the broody hatch. Find her a good place to raise em.

This was just quick stop in. Dread week is taking its toll. Both mental and physical. 9 days in 4 togo. 47 hours on clock from sun. Morning til tonight.

So 3 mountain lights and it's time for some sack time.

Thanks Freedman77,

I have 3 BR hens, 1 Choc hen, 1 BR jake, and 1 Choc jake (soon to be Toms).

My BR jake is the boss. He is the only one breeding the BR hens. I have not seen the Choc hen sit yet. I will still set her eggs just in
case.

.Not a great picture, trail camera.
