A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

So, yesterday in the rain, I let the turkeys out of their pen around 4:30pm. Yes, I had not turned them out earlier because it was a literal down pouring of liquid stuff and I had my hands full inside trying to get ready for company that was supposed to be here today. (and not here yet!!)

Because I use security cameras around the property, I use them to watch the birds during daylight hours. If the turkeys wander too far to the lower fence, I go and call them back. If they disappear in a blind spot, I go look for them. That as worked well so far.

While working in the living room on ferret cage duty, I realized the camera for the front yard was showing was strange movements near my mailbox. The mailbox, which is located on the other side of the road from my driveway, is a tad hard to see due to tree limbs, fog, and rain. Then I realized I was seeing turkeys sitting on the church's chain link fence at the end of their field.

I beat feet out the door.

Do you know that herding 4 turkeys is worse than trying to herd a dozen or even two dozen feral cats?? Four semi-intelligent birds - each one going it's own way and paying NO attention to their MOMMA!

I guess the excitement of exploration was more important.

I finally got them back across the road and through the gate when they suddenly took off to the back of our big front shed. Goldie and Brandie hopped right up on my 4 foot high not-bear proof trash bin (ask me how I know) and proceeded to trash talk me (no pun!).

I rush to open the back gate so they can get to where they belong and Tommie immediately walked over to me - and through the gate. The other three - not so much and instead elected to fly to their pen.

Tommie walked on down and joined them with no fussing. Hmmmm, I thought. Quietly trailing behind Tommie, I barely let his tail feathers pass the point of no return and that was That!

I shut the pen gate.

And locked it.

It was 5:36pm

Yup. They got an entire hour to "explore".
I think I am feeding too much.

They can be so funny. I have a new leader, I think. It appears the RP tom is the leader with the bully in prison. They all follow right behind me with him being the only one strutting and making that weird cooing noise. I have to watch him as I am not sure if he wants to take my spot over as the big boss, or is just cooing to tell me he is there. He has never made a move on me before, but when a new leader comes in, I have to watch things closely for a while.

If he would make a move on me, he will lose fast.

Looks like the babies are becoming big enough in Erroneous eyes to be competition for attention. He's a very jeolous turkey when it comes to my attention but before tonight, he didn't care if the little ones were getting post and cuddled. Tonight though, he was very upset that Misty was getting my attention and threatened to peck her/him lol. What a brat. It looks like Romeo will have a fan club very soon. I'll be taking him to meet my daughter's girl scout troop right around Thanksgiving :)

Tommie appears to be the leader in my group. Iron doesn't bother with him much at all and is more likely to just go off by himself - but still stays close to the group as a whole.

The hens on the other hand, have no problem pecking Tommie right in the head. So far, I guess he doesn't mind.:lau

Oh, did I tell you what happened with the turkeys and my Henry Rifle hat??

Snitch seldom travels with the turkeys, She hangs out with the chickens all day long. The only time she is with the turkeys is when the turkeys are with the chickens.

I was in the pole barn working most the day, this evening I did not get the "snack" out to them in time. I turned around and had 5 toms looking at me with the "come on, get on the stick, we need our snack"... Of course their snack is just their regular feed in a smaller feeder, but no sense telling them that...Stupid birds.

I filled the little feeder and they were happy.

I've been giving apples or some scrambled eggs. They turn their collective noses up at scratch.

Love the turkey stories! The hat video is hysterical!
Annie is just about done with her molt. Daisy is in the midst of it. Poor girl.
Their baby Sussex are growing like crazy. Both turkey moms are still fully engaged. And exhausted! Here are the babies preening on a bench under the watchful eye of their Turkey mom
