A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

If you can find a mill I can give you a recipe for a ton.... It's not too complicated.
Thank You.. so far no mill with in a 2 hr drive one way
was it in these?

Here ya go... Example Rations is for heritage breeds and PPRationguide is for commercial stock such as CX, commercial layers, and BBW turkeys.

Hey all! Very happy first-time turkey owner here. Last week we rescued Bob (our Lavender Jake) and Babygirl (our Royal Palm hen) and despite the quick relocation, they are so loving and trusting! To my knowledge, Bob previously had a broken wing that has fully healed and doesn't seem to have any issues with it. He doesn't roost, so he has no breast feathers.
Babygirl previously had "head trauma" and was nursed back to health. The only indication that I notice of her "head trauma" is that she spins in circles when she gets startled or really excited- otherwise she is roosting, eating, drinking, pecking, etc. normally and gets around perfectly fine.
I want to do everything I can to give these sweethearts the best life! So I have a few questions- they have been penned up for 5 days, when would be an ideal time for them to free-range? I do let them out for a few while I am outside and I herd them back in before I go back inside.
They are on a 20% all-flock feed with free choice oyster shell and grit, is there anything else I could or should be supplementing with to help with the condition of their feathers or overall health?
I've built a "stepped" roost, but Bob seems to have no desire and sleeps on the floor. Is there any way I could coax him to roost or is this a milestone he will eventually (maybe not?) meet?
What are some ways to encourage your turkeys to listen to you or how you gain their trust? I've tried slipping them treats but I don't think they had that much exposure in their previous home. So far, they have made the connection that I = food and water, but I'd like to try to establish a better relationship with them beyond just food and water :)
Thank you all in advance and I'm excited to be included in such a great group of turkey lovers :love

Based on this photo, I am guessing your tom may be a Rusty Lavender instead of a Lavender.

@duluthralphie Rusty Lavender

To me the Tom looks under weight/malnourished, his head size versus neck size seems out of proportion. I would feed a started feed (28%) for a few months, and then again when the molt sets in this fall. It takes a lot of protein to grow feathers. For roosting I would try giving the tom a ladder to walk up and he might surprise you. I have a Royal Palm that had given up trying to get into the trees at night, but once we built him a ladder, he started to roost again.

Hi Pmoore ....lucky turkeys to have you rescue them! They can bond strongly with humans. One of my hens I rescued off the side of the road in the middle of rush hour traffic. I spent a lot of time sitting in a lawn chair just hanging out with her. Didn't take long for her to decide I was her new best friend. I bought her a roommate. Had to run her down in a field. So neither had much contact with humans. Now, they are both like dogs with feathers. They follow me around everywhere. Come when I call them. And will hop in my lap to take naps. My advice is to spend time with them. Just hang out with them. Hand them a treat once in awhile. They will begin to trust you. And soon you too will have lap turkeys! They can make great pets!

We had a break in the heat & humidity yesterday! Only got to the mid 80's! Welcome break....especially for the girls. They were being silly on our evening stroll. Flapping & twirling. Grazing & bug hunting. They didn't want to go to bed. Daisy was especially animated. She was the one twirling. I know my neighbors think she's nuts! They sure were enjoying the cooler weather.

Haven't on in awhile. My main source of Internet took a frisbee fly Into a concrete wall. Fixed now. Still owe you all some guess the hidden gene pics.

Hot here as well. 111 heat index yesterday. Supposed to be the same today.

Selling off most of my flock today. Only keeping 2 toms and 4 hens all bourbon.

Congrats on those that have new bug eyed babies. I should have new ones on the 4th.

Welcome pmoore. Congrats on your rescue turkeys.

Won't stir the pot on the gmo vs non gmo. But unless you grow it yourself or an elevator or has a farmer grow crops specifically for feed usage to their specs. The odds of getting a non gmo corn or soybean product are miniscule at best.

Memphis. Have you put Ted in a show yet.
