A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Guineas will do that for you.

When I lived in PA, our dogs always had fleas and the fleas had to be dealt with. In WY, I have never had fleas on any of my dogs. There are fleas here. All of the wild animals have them and they can carry the plague but I just never had fleas on any of my dogs.
@R2elk
Once everything has settled down and settled out around here, I might try a couple of guineas. There are a lot of folks around who raise those. I've had geese who were "attack geese" when I was on the farm and they certainly "welcomed" anyone who drove in.

I have had fleas before and have dealt with them more times than I care to count over the years. That said, this was a bit different. I have 8 ferrets, a cat and now the dog (who has been here for approx 4 months?) inside. I have had ferrets for years and they are normally the first that let me know if there is an issue; yet, there has not been one for the last 10 years other than a few here and there. Fleas can decimate a ferrets blood supply really fast - enough to kill them. I still give them a flea bath at least once a year just to be on the safe side; and, Of course, I do routine checks because they are naturally a "scratching critter".

I know the squirrels and other wildlife carry them and I live right where they all are. So fleas are expected and I realize I've been pretty fortunate to not have a major infestation. I actually carry a flea comb in my pocketbook and a couple of others in the house.

This literally happened over the space of 24-48 hours. I noticed a spot of blood on Roxxie's forehead and low and behold, she was covered - to the tune of a couple hundred. That's what the antibiotics were for as she had a secondary infection from the number of bites. My cat is spayed, routinely goes outside, but also has a flea treatment. The dog did not, mostly because it just wasn't one of the things at the front of my mind. Nothing like a dose of reality to move things up on your list.

I live in the part of western Maryland where I can see PA and WV from my front door. There are fleas (yet my daughter in WV hasn't seen any either lol).

The worse place I ever lived regarding fleas was the state of Florida. I think they raise them specifically to target tourists.

Had terrible time with fleas and this dog. Tried everything for sale. I read fleas like a clean dog and hate sulfur. SOOOO I tired that last year... the dog is happy he doesn't get a bath and I poof him with sulfur. No fleas last year and so far this year. He does stink a bit, but he is too old to get in my bed anymore so I can live with it for no fleas.

They are relentless down here!
Indeed they are, Trim!! Lived there for 3 years in the country. Even the chickens couldn't keep down all the insects - from ants that had stingers on their rears to scorpions to the black widow spiders to the "love bugs". ICK UCK ICK - and I am not afraid of most insects, but my heavens! Had to always check the kids' clothes before they could get dressed for school cause you had no idea what might be hidden in them.

I do not recommend anyone get a couple of guineas. Guineas are a flock bird and do best in large numbers. I never recommend that anyone start with less than 10 guineas.

Velvet ants have stingers and are actually wasps, not ants.

Point taken, R2elk.

If you mean the red/black ants (wasps - I did not know that part) that are as big as a house - yes, they are in Florida. And Maryland. Saw a couple already this year, but not as prevalent as the little "pissants". In Florida, the ants with stingers looked like a regular small black ant - the most common ones around here - with stingers on their butts. They would travel my clothesline from pole to tree and I would have to go wipe the line before I could hang up clothes. These would turn around and point the stinger AT you - as a group.
