A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Guess it's time to trim wings. The lawn guys showed up nextdoor & started all their mowers & blowers & Iris blew over the fence! I actually drove around the block. Wasn't sure which yard she landed in. Luckily found her in the first backyard & recaptured her. It's a million degrees out, she's panting, I'm panting and while walking to my van this guy stops in his truck & wants to talk turkeys. Geez. And I drove her home in my lap under the A/C. She got some real height & distance on her flight! I'm blaming Daisy for this!!

Lol what an adventure! You always said that there's something different about palms lol.

Only trim one wing but you'll still have to watch her.. They're creative!

Good morning!

LOL!! Your right! I've long ago determined RP's are "different ". Could NOT resist that penciled gene! I'm determined to make it work. She is sweet, skinny, but sweet. And she looked like an F18 launching off an aircraft carrier! They hit those mowers all at the same time & she didn't hesitate....boom....she launched. Poppy didn't seemed bothered until she disappeared on the horizon. Of course not much phases Daisy.

Soooo... I want to buy a greenhouse kit to keep my baby birdies in. Well, all ages really... I was just trying to sound nursery rhymish. We’re good for summer housing, but my coops are wholly inadequate for this thundering herd I’ve accumulated...

I know some folks keep chickens in greenhouses and I’m not worried about the ducks and geese, but what about my turkeys? I’m a little concerned what they might do to the plastic. My big BBWs wouldn’t hurt it I’m sure (though they’ll be in the freezer in any case), but the heritage birds are so... Spunky? Vivacious? Exuberant? I’ll be butchering most of the males (more than half of my big poults) but that still leaves 5-6 females plus all the beautiful new babies I got from R2. Never having yet dealt with adult heritage turkeys, I’m not really sure what they’ll be like. I’ll furnish the place for them of course... roosts, nesting boxes... I guess they can handle the dust baths all right.

There won’t be any (authorized) plants in there with the birds. Actually, I’m counting on them to kill the grass, etc. & eat the bugs. I’ll be deep bedding with spoiled hay & pine chips & whatever else I can get so as to end up with compost rather than icky loads of stinky-poo. One of the doors will be wide and tall enough for the tractor in case of excess compost.

But... what do y’all think about keeping the turkeys in there with the other birds?

My turkeys have access to the coop during the daytime. At night they are all out on their roosts in all types of weather including -30°F and/or snowstorms. They do fine.
