A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Junior has been displaying and gobbling for months... as I recall he is a January hatch. I think he has ideas of being top Tom.

He seems to challenge the second in command several times a day.

I set a gopher trap today near their shed. The young turkeys surrounded the trap and marking flag for a conference on what it is and if it is acceptable in the area. After 15 minutes they seem to have decided it can stay.

Ok, was just wondering. I have two that have been displaying hourly if not more for the past two weeks. The other two have not. The two that are displaying with tail feathers up and have significantly larger snoods hanging down towards their beaks, I have figured to perhaps be toms.

A couple of hours ago, I had a new refrigerator installed. While the guy was running a drill, I heard a gobble - very loud very clear. During a space of approximately 5 minutes, the same one - who was also displaying - gobbled two more times.

These turkeys hatched starting May 21st around midnight (pipping) and finished by noon. Today is August 26, making them 5 weeks old.

What do you think?

We have four jakes that are four/five months old now i think and none have displayed nor gobbled. Our tom is super great, gentle and will watch over them all. But they see him as their protector. Those silly jakes will run to him if someone else is by their mama hen and they are startled. It is so adorable. So they do not feel the need i rekon. :). We also have four more that are a month younger.... have seen those display only a few times but no gobbles yet from them.

My silly sg hen seems to be broody again. Grrrr. The last two days i have had kick her off the nest they all use for makin business. If she is still doin it tomorrow off to jail she will go i do believe. We have all the jennies that i wanted and two spares and eight jakes for dinners. So no need for anymore hatchin here this year.

Oh! What do you all sell dinner sized turks for? Cleaned and ready for the table birds. We have had a few people ask us and i just do not know a fair price to tell them. Most people sell on the hoof full growns round here for $50-$80 and younglings go for bout $40 while fairly new poults go for $10-$15. But also round here if i tell someone $60 for a table ready bird i will most likely get laughed out of the place. ;/. Last year at our church’s fall festival we put one in the auction... it went for $35. And to is that is just not a fair price for the work and feed involved. So i just dunno what the right answer is. We are completely ok with sellin none and havin extras in the freezer too.

Your tom sounds like a good papa sfgwife.

Nice evening here last night. Daisy had two toddlers fussing over her. They sat there picking clovers for her. She ate them, to their delight. The one little guy would giggle like crazy when Daisy would take his clover. His dad was amazed....I didn't realize, but the kid has autism. Apparently he doesn't engage with animals much. Dad took pictures for the mom. It was a big deal for them. I don't know much about autism.... told dad the kid is welcome anytime. Dad was flabbergasted that the kid was engaging with , of all things, a turkey. They've tried a cat & the kid ignores it. And apparently he worries about dogs. They are new to the hood....this was the first time they stopped to meet Daisy.

Aww! What a wonderful story! I think Daisy should become a registered therapy bird and go to children's hospitals. She would spread so much love and joy :)
