A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I have yet to see a broody turkey, but I'm sure it's an interesting sight.

Sorry for interrupting your egg conversation, but I have an important question that I can't find an answer to.

I installed a light bulb into my chicken / turkey coop yesterday to force my hens into laying. Will the extra light cause the turkeys to start breeding early? I haven't thinned the toms yet, unfortunately.

I have no idea about the light on the turkeys.. BUT a broody turkey is like a chicken. some are just fine and some are complete Belly buttons.

I had one last year that actually flew off the nest and attacked me. Scared the poop out of me. Ethel just gives me the evil eye if I get too close.

I think it should make them breed earlier but haven't tried it.

I dug around a bit further and found an article on BackyardPoultry magazine's website:

Looks like I still have a couple weeks left to get my toms thinned out.

Here's another question for you experts. If the turkeys are massing, does that mean that the girls should start laying soon? Adam was on Pebbles again today and she wasn't complaining this time and Eve has started squatting too. (Fyi, I have the light on in the turkey coop usually until about 8:30 every night).

So, in other news, I think my husband has finally joined me on the dark side! He's actualy becoming an enabler himself which I didn't think was possible. About a month ago, when he found out that I had secretly bought another incubator and had an old one up for sale, he said why don't I just keep the old one for when the other two are full? WAIT, WHAT!? Since someone said they wanted it, I didn't think too much of it but then the money order that they were supposedly sending me never came so I guess I get to keep 3 incubators lol. Then, today, he said he'd been thinking and when spring gets here, he wants to build me a nice, new brooder for in the garage, not just one made of plywood and he wants to put it on wheels so we can move it around, anywhere we want. He also knows that I'm already planning on starting to hatch again. I don't think he wants to admit it, but I think he's getting excited for hatching season and babies again lol. He doesn't know that I plan on surprising him and ordering some fancy cochin and really poofy silkie hatching eggs (he thinks cochins are awesome and likes the way the poofy silkies look). I'm getting really excited. Now, I just need to talk him into some little goats :) I think it's also time to start trying to save some money for more land lol

Wow Aurora....this is huge! DH is a convert! Very exciting!

I'm sorry, no idea when your girls will start to lay. But I'm happy for Adam!

Sorry for such an inane post...but really. ..is there anything funnier than a turkey running? My girls were being silly tonight. I'm enjoying these guys way too much! And after all the silliness, it was turkey tuck-in time. Nothing better than a few hen hugs!

Geez you guys have been chatting about everything under the sun lately....catching up has been interesting reading :D

Ralphie - hope you have a great time and Carrie is able to sing despite your being so closely seated!

Aurora - woo hoo, so glad you were able to convert your DH to incubating..... so exciting :) I don't dare start incubating anything....I'll never be able to stop!

Memphis - I love watching turkeys run, they look like gangly, goofy kids - I video mine so I can watch it and giggle later - I love having turkeys lol

Copper - hopefully you have poults soon - are you planning to incubate or let your hen sit?

Feathyr - I'll be curious if the lighting speeds things up. I have lights on in my barn for about 12-14 hours per day (just due to work schedules), maybe mine will start early too :fl

Copper. ...what cross are you incubating? Do you light your coop to get your hens to lay?

Fiesty, I have a short clip on my phone of my turkeys running. Never fails to crack up my friends. Of course they all think I've lost my mind.

Chaos. ..what did you decide to get for hens?
