A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Welcome to the thread MPB. Your handle is way too long for me to type..

I find it interesting you all have to put you turkeys to bed. I thought it was just me. Chickens go to bed on their own every night. Guineas go to bed on their own 90% of the time, the other times they sit outside and are owl bait.

BUT the turkeys refuse to go to bed on their own. They start to roost about 20 minutes before dark. If they are roosting when we put them to bed they are near impossible to get to bed. if we put them to bed before that they go like obedient little puppies. They just go where they belong as long as we follow them, except for Ginger and Penguin who try to make a break for it at the last second before going in the door.

Even now while locked in the guinea gulag they refuse to go into the turkey house. Ethel and a few smart ones go in, the rest sit outside. The night before last, before we left I thought I would leave them go in on their own as I would not be there for next 2 weeks, NOPE they sat outside. Dumb things.

Also I have a new wallparer backgroun behind my apps. I used a picture of the feather I pulled from Ginger as background. It is so cool, not busy but a picture of my bird.

I also put a main wallpaper on the iphone too. this picture:

My current, soon to be ex-wife liked it so much she put it on her FB page. Her liking a chicken picture is most curious. She is such a good woman I have offered her the position of head housekeeper for Carrie and I..

She has not accepted yet. I am sure she will soon.

It's 34 degrees here this morning. Pretty chilly for us. But man, my turkeys love the cooler weather. Lots of running, flapping & soccer playing going on out here.
Both my girls are full of pin feathers on their necks & chests. Are tails feathers the last to come in? I'm anxious for the to shed their ratty tail feathers!

Ralph! How far did you get yesterday? What's your ETA in Nashville?
Personally, I think Speckled Sussex hens are just gorgeous! That's a darling picture. I just love mine. I think your wife has good taste in chickens! :)

As it starts to get dark here, the chickens wander down to their coop. But my turkeys gather on my back porch & stare through the backdoor window. That's how I know they are ready for bed. They follow me down to the coop for their bedtime treats & last snuggle. True lappers. They know the routine. Or rather, they have me trained!

Have you made an appointment with the tailor to custom fit your turkeys personalized flight suits yet?

Welcome to the turkey fun. What state are you in? I have (actually had) a Sweetgrass pair (the birds in my avatar) until Miss Cleo up and died on me. Not entirely sure what she got sick from either. Now I have only Mr. T-Bone who's my Sweetgrass Tom. I've been working on a quarantine pen lately so I can get him a couple more girlfriends so he won't be so lonely. I think I paid $25 a piece for my birds as well. It all depends on supply and demand type thing for your area. Around here Sweetgrass are really hard to find for some reason, don't know why since they are such a beautiful bird.
I am in NC. I've learned since that Sweetgrass are hard to find here. Never saw one while I was looking for my tom, accidentally bought one, and haven't seen one since. I've looked several places. If I find a hen though, I'm snatching her up! I'm downsizing on mchickens and am hoping to go a bit into turkeys :-D
Sorry about Cleo!

Well MPB...we are all pretty attached to our turkeys. They are entertaining & their personalities are much different that chickens. In fact we developed a turkey temperment scale:

Lappers = Short for Lap Turkey. These are turkeys that seek out human contact. Love to sit in laps and snuggles.

Tolerant Turkey = A turkey that will allow you go pick it up and hold, but doesn't seek out contact.

Lurky Turkey = A turkey that follows you around, enjoys the company, but doesn't want to be held.

Belly Button = Jerks

If you look back through some of our old posts, you'll see a lot of turkeys engaged in Lap Sitting! :D. If j had to choose, I'd keep my turkeys over my chickens in a second!

So Ive ended up with two lurky toms.... my hopes for baby RP is dashed. The neighbors will be eating Tonto, hes kinda a belly button when he goes next door, hes always been nice to me but I'm not a 5yr old with a nerf gun.... GG is a George I guess and needs a new home, I'm hoping someone will give him a good home soon. He's been so sweet and nice to my chickens I'm kinda sad he's gotta go. I'm hoping to find some chocolates close by, they seem like they'd be a better fit for us.
