A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Aurora ...no way the girls can resist Adam. He's so handsome. But it is saying something that Pebbles has fallen for him too! What a guy! Is he still up for a quick snuggle before bed?

Brandy...why do you have to get rid of George too? He's beautiful and not a Belly Button? ?

Actualy, I think Pebbles is smitten with me lol. I pet her and she squats for me, Adam just takes advantage and hops on lol. I've never seen her squat willingly for him.

Adam OCCASIONALLY will still enjoy an evening lovin' session but he's becoming more of a lurky turkey than anything. He's so funny when they're out free ranging. He's still getting used to it so he'll be busy displaying to a rooster top let him know who's boss and heel lose track of his ladies then go running to them. Or, I'll walk outside and the girls will all come running like always and he'll look up like what?! What's going on?! And go running blindly with them. It's so funny!

Sex-linked turkeys. I now know how to make them. :weee Take a pure Royal Palm tom and put it over a pure Sweetgrass hen. All of the girls will be RP and all of the boys will be Sweetgrass (split: Narragansett).
The hens(royal palms) will be light yellow, but the toms( sweetgrass split Narragansett) will be light yellow with a stripe most likely!

Memphis, I'm not sure I'd be able to find a hen here for George. He's flighty and I'm not sure he'd stay home now he's seen greener pastures (not that the neighbors is any greener just not as flat, I've got trees and they have boulders) I think Narragansett would be nice to have. Maybe I will just try and get a pair of each and the first ones to work out will be the ones I keep. So this will be strike one for RP and if it comes back around they will have another shot.

so now I've gotta look for Narragansett or chocolate pairs, then maybe some BR, any other breed suggestions?

Will it work with a sweetgrass tom over an RP hen?

Well MPB...we are all pretty attached to our turkeys. They are entertaining & their personalities are much different that chickens. In fact we developed a turkey temperment scale:

Lappers = Short for Lap Turkey. These are turkeys that seek out human contact. Love to sit in laps and snuggles.

Tolerant Turkey = A turkey that will allow you go pick it up and hold, but doesn't seek out contact.

Lurky Turkey = A turkey that follows you around, enjoys the company, but doesn't want to be held.

Belly Button = Jerks

If you look back through some of our old posts, you'll see a lot of turkeys engaged in Lap Sitting!

. If j had to choose, I'd keep my turkeys over my chickens in a second!
That's cool! Griffin's in the transition stage from tolerant turkey to lapper! When I got him he was a lurky, and has slowly worked his way up.

He has moods. Sometimes he's just tolerant, and other times he's a 20 pound turkey climbing in my lap

He's getting sweeter though. I wish I'd had him as a poult :-D

Well MPB, looks like your becoming a turkey convert. Have you been to the Porter Heritage Breed Turkey site? You need to go! But be prepared, you'll want one of everything! It also has a turkey calculator that we are all addicted too. You can punch in the genotype of your turkeys and it tells you what the cross will produce.

Aurora, Adam cracks me up! So does Pebbles!

Had all the girls out ranging today. Went out the side gate to walk down to my neighbors. She out was raking leaves, she's also my chicken /turkey sitter. She was standing there laughing. Wasn't sure why until she told me to turn around. Yep...Daisy...running behind me. What a mom's girl. She hopped the gate. I know I'm repeating myself, but a turkey running is the funniest thing! She was good, just hung out with us nibbling on clover. Had to cut our visit short, could hear poor Annie down at my house barking her beak off. Jogged back home, just to get Daisy running & flapping. I know my neighbors think I'm certifiable.

So...do you suppose we'll get invited to Ralphie ' s impending wedding?

Aurora - So funny that Adam is still enamoured with the girls. I suppose he's just enjoying the female company - once the novelty wears off he'll probably be back to look for attention from you :D I'm jealous of all your incubators, but am petrified that if I got one I'd be building more pens too!

Memphis - I can just see Daisy following you down the street, she's definitely attached lol! I run around the yard so I can laugh at mine while they are jogging like goofs (thankfully my neighbors aren't close enough to see me most of the time...).

Chaos - You definitely should get more turkeys..... just keep building pens, it'll be fine ;)

MPB - It's so neat how you got your guy.....get ready for turkey math....they multiply quickly :gig

Well my mystery chicken that came with the bourbons has been a bit of a mystery.....had no idea if it was a hen or roo. I have finally decided that it is a roo. At 4 months the little dude makes no noise, and has showed no rooster behavior - but I came back from my trip and he had suddenly sprouted a big comb and grew rooster feathers. He's a pretty boy, and well behaved - so he can stay :p

The turkeys put themselves to bed today and I didn't even have to ask them to go in.....I wonder if this is a new habit :fl I gave them their usual treats, but offered them in a different container - that got me the evil stink-eye. They stared at that container for a loooooong time, and refused to eat them. You know that look where they stare down at something with their head cocked sideways and look down their beak with complete disdain?? Turkeys can be so funny - I left them alone with it, and they finally gave in and ate treats out of the "nasty, different" bowl. They are stubborn little hooligans some days :lau

I can't wait for tomorrow - I can play outside with the birds!! I haven't been home during daylight hours in almost 2 weeks :weee

Happy weekend!

I'm not sure if the picture is posting from my mobile, so if not I will upload from my pc later. But I'm a new turkey mom and am wondering what kind of Tom/Jake I have. Can anyone tell?
