A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

:gig It’s funny, and a shock! I swear you’ve had the same profile picture since I met you!
Indeed, my normal profile picture is a video game avatar, it is just so up close and such a silly video game avatar that nobody knew it was a video game avatar, thus I blended in perfectly with everyone despite my inherent silliness. I love my moonkin avatar!

Hey y'all, any of you that are good with genetics, I am kind of stumped and needing assistance haha.

I'm trying to get the correct genetics on Porter's calculator for 2 of my hens that I bred myself, a Rusty Slate and a Red Bronze. Both of them were out of 3 hens I had at the time, 2 self blues and what I thought was a black. For reference, we hatched 3 eggs in total from those 3 hens, and we ended up with 1 Red Bronze, 1 Rusty Slate and 1 Rusty Black.

However, using Porter's calculator, I can no longer replicate a Red Bronze as an option out of them. I have been stumped in trying to recreate it. However, I remembered something about the black hen. I got the 3 from the same breeder, and assumed they were all out of the same tom (They were being sold as blue slates + blacks, but I found out the blues were self blues because they ended up with the small eye problem and also presented no black patches in their feathering at all). The black hen always had some cream/white-edged feathers on her butt. I found some old pictures of her (She disappeared shortly after we started collecting eggs from her, sadly, so I don't have her anymore to look at for reference) and I'm wondering if she's actually a Mottled Black instead of just a Black. All of the Black turkeys I find examples of are basically solid black.

All the examples of Mottled Blacks I can find have extreme mottling, so if any of you who have ever bred mottled's can let me know if this is just a very minimal patterned mottled that'd be super helpful!

In order to know what genetics your turkeys have, we have to know the father also. Not all Red Bronze or Rusty Blacks have the same genetics. It depends on both parents to be able to determine which hidden genes they may have. The simplest Red Bronze is from a Bronze and Bourbon Red pairing which will be bb Rr. Crossing a Royal Palm hen with a Bourbon Red tom can also make Red Bronze (bb1 Ccg Nn Rr for males and bb1 Ccg N- Rr for hens).

Your black hen looks exactly like what I would get for Blacks produced by mating a pair of Blue Slates. She is not a mottled. Her gray feathers will be in the same area after every molt. Mine usually had a gray band near the base of the tail.

Mottled turkeys can start with minimal mottling but that mottling will increase with every molt.

Okay yeah, I thought that as another possibility. Unfortunately I didn't know my tom's parents, I think the people I got him from exclusively bred Bourbon Reds but I'm not counting any hidden genes out on either sides. I was curious to see what my possibilities were just from the genetics I knew. I had initially assumed the patterns on her came from the slate, I never got to see her molt more than once but it's most likely just the slate black color. Thanks for the help!
