A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I don’t know if any of you remember me saying when I sold my last turkeys, that if I ever found local Sweetgrass turkeys for sale, I would buy them...

well, ta-da!

A few weeks ago I got a voicemail from a man who had saved my phone number from one of my prior Craigslist ads. Saying that he had ordered Sweetgrass poults last June from Porter’s and ended up with way too many toms, and would I be willing to help him make a Craigslist ad so he could sell most of them.

So I called him back and we had a long chat. Turns out he’s in his 70s and not real tech literate, and he offered to trade me a tom in exchange for me making the ad for him, and that way he wouldn’t have to figure out how to sign up for a CL account. And he was willing to sell me a hen, too, since I didn’t just want a lone tom. Well when I got there today, I was able to buy a second hen, so now I have this trio.

Back in the turkey business again! :D

So their tails are all ratty from living in close quarters with 8 males and 7 females, and all the fighting and overmating that that entails. I netted and loaded them myself, so I picked the biggest looking tom with the least amount of wounds and scabs, and for the hens I just grabbed decent looking ones. I feel bad for the 5 remaining hens, because the ratio is even worse now, and I probably took away the lead jake. With any luck, the 7 other jakes will now be too busy jockeying for top position to bother the ladies. But really, I hope the man gets a lot of response to his ad and sells those extra boys quickly.

I never thought there would be a day when I'd have twice as many turkeys as you @duluthralphie !

Speaking of our beloved turkeys, there was a bit of a homecoming this past weekend. The first swap of the season, a lady came with a very familiar turkey....Phil! Last year, I sold him off and kept one of his sons in his place (Taz). Well, Taz seems to have developed twisted toes and I really don't want to use him for breeding so when I saw my Phil, I bought him back immediately. I was so happy to see him and the lady was happy that I was willing to buy him back. I did have to fend off the wolves though as he was the only turkey there and everyone wanted to buy him lol. He's had to contend with Romeo and Taz for his position in the flock and I think Taz knows that he's suddenly lined up for this Thanksgiving. He's giving Phil the hardest time, even though Romeo is still top tom.

How many do we all have?
I think I have 29 turkeys. Hard to tell so I could have a couple more or less

I have 16 right now. 3 toms and 13 hens.

I figured out why Pebbles looks miserable and smaller....she's molting. I couldn't really tell until she completely dropped her tail lol. I feel better knowing that it's just a molt and not old age getting to her!
