A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Ok, now I understand the confusion. The "penciled tail" does not refer to the pencilling gene, which is a separate mutation and can only express in BWB birds. The text must be seen in the context of the 1930s, when there was no pencilling (pn) mutation around.
Asmundson was working with dominant and recessive slated birds and the biggest difference is, that rec. slates, other than dom. slated ones, do show a wing and tail pattern.

Thank you.

Thank you.
One interesting fact. During the research for my book, I found some paintings of pencilled birds here in Europe from 1653 (Carstian Luyckx).

I have 3 broodies right now. I blame the husband who was doing a lot of the coop chores for me over the past couple days and not collecting eggs :/ Of course Pebbles is involved and you all know she won't break until she gets babies... she will starve herself to death if I let her. Also Sky for her first time and Princess who is always a part of a broody bunch lol.
Starving herself is exactly what my broody is doing, lol. I have to make sure she eats and drinks, because while I trust all my other turkeys to do that properly, I am 99% certain she doesn't. I did a few tests to see if she would. I would run her out, and then she would come back in the coop and.... lay in a completely empty spot with no eggs. She did it every time I ran her out. So I know she wasn't leaving on her own because she couldn't find her stupid eggs unless I pushed her over to them :idunno When I tried to break her by barring access to all the nesting areas, I found her laying on an empty dust bathing spot out in the open trying to brood there.

My tom adopted 6-8 week old poults when I added them to the flock a couple years ago lol. It was not planned, they were just being added because they were getting older and he gathered them up under his wings and cared for them lol
My hen just went broody again so she left her month and a half old poults with the tom and the 3 month old and he is taking great care oth them!

Sounds just like Pebbles lol. I'll have to wait a couple weeks and then give her some chicks to raise since chicks are tougher than poults.

What an arrangement they have! They must be planning to overrun the world with turkeys!

my last hen with the single blue gene and a red gene and maybe carrying a bronze gene came out of hiding yesterday.... The fox did not find her and she had 10 poults in tow! I swiped the poults with interesting down patterns, there was one that might be a lavender, a wild type pattern poult, one with blue and red down that has a barred head, I want to see how all these grow out!
She is in my truck topper broody pen with the rest of her poults and a few black poults.

Glad she made it, and brought interesting presents

While we were on vacation the house sitter didn't collect her eggs so she went broody on 12 eggs. We were only gone 5 days and when we left she 6 eggs in the nest. She is such a good layer! Sometimes I feel like she lays more eggs than some of my chicken hens.
