A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I’ve been getting eggs from one female chocolate, my eldest one at 2 years old, and today my youngest one, maybe like 8-9 months old, sat down for the tom I have and mated with him. I get the feeling she’s going to be the next female to start laying, so I may be getting a lot of chocolate poults. None of my other color hens have started yet, as far as i’ve seen. One black hen sat down, but hasn’t laid yet.

Didn't Memphis have family in New Orleans and go there fairly often? For some reason, I keep thinking that. The kids had their band/ chorus concert tonight and they played this, New Orleans Jazz Funeral. It was really neat. DD plays flute and is near impossible to see but DS is one of the soloists up front (clarinet).

Memphis was always visiting family in St. Louis. Sure do miss her.

St. Louis, that's what it was! I don't know why I was thinking New Orleans. I miss her too. She was the absolute best and sweetest person.
Yes she is one of the people I miss the most.
So many are gone one way or another from byc that I enjoyed reading. It's like loosing RL people.

This is my spare Bourbon Red tom. Right at 5 months old. Dressed weight was 8#4oz, including the neck. The neck by itself was 8oz! Kind of puny, I would say, but I don’t need a lot and smaller is easier to cook.

This is my first time processing a turkey. It really wasn’t that difficult since he turned out so small. But I took so long with it that rigor mortis set in and I can’t bend his legs to get him fully in the dish pan. Maybe tomorrow, but I’m planning to dry brine him, so he doesn’t actually have to fit all the way in there.

Recently somewhere we were talking about methods of killing turkeys since they are bigger than chickens and don’t fit kill cones too well. One person said they duct tape the wings to the body and hang them for slitting the throat. Several other people said they cut a hole in a feed bag for the head to go through. I decided to do both, sort of. I pulled his head through the corner of the feed bag, and then I duct taped the bag in a couple of places to hold him securely. It worked really well.

I usually zip tie their (chickens that is) legs together and hang them from a tree or a fence. Then a 5 gallon bucket lined with a trash bag underneath. Since I’ve got a bum knee right now, I decided not to carry him to the tree or the fence, and I just hung him right there on the chain link dog kennel that is their pen. I really liked using the kennel, because I could hang him up high enough to easily work with his size, and then I could lower him down into the bucket to contain the mess. Much better than the tree, whose roots prevent the bucket from actually catching the blood!

They do make larger kill cones to fit turkeys I have two larger ones. One for 1st year Heritage and another larger one that older and broad breasted fit in. But I do a lot of turkeys, so the expense was worth it for me. Your method looks like it worked very well for no expense and would work well for those not doing turkeys a lot. Enjoy that bird :thumbsup
