A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I bet the new blind turkey breed would be a great hit, everyone would want one!

(Ok, now not joking anymore

) I am gonna breed a Chocolate CCL that lays olive eggs... just for fun cause I like having unique colored birds. I have found a chocolate cuckoo orpington nearby and might get him. Just have to get some CCL hens now and then hatch out some eggs!

Oh yeah and Creamettes crossed with barred rock I am pretty sure will all look like barred rocks first generation... the EE (extended black) gene in chickens appears to be dominant....

I was just picking a breed at random, what does it take to make a "breed" over a mutt in my yard? If I get enough mutts that look the same, can I call them Duluthies...

A blind breed of turkey would be great, no picking on other birds. No excess running so they would gain weight faster, and the picture of them with sunglasses and a white cane is priceless.

Love the visual of a turkey with dark glasses and a white cane.

I figured you were just picking a random breed, but it was fun to try calculating it using the color calculating calculator. (calculating calculator seemed too redundant so I added another calculating... that's how my brain works). Wow, spelling calculating too much makes it hard to remember how to spell it

That particular cross is not likely to create an olive colored egg but is more likely to create a green egg.

Check out the Cream Legbar Hybrid thread to see many different crosses that have already been done.

The color calculator is just that. You are crossing breeds? Are there different breeds? I have heard some say they are all one breed with just variation in colors, is that right or wrong?

It almost seems "breeds" are kind of arbitrary. Even with chickens, take my Creamettes, They have leghorn and I have no idea what in their background. Yet they are considered a breed.

If I cross my Creamettes with a Barred rock can I just decide it is a new breed?

If Ginger was to live (which he will not) and I crossed him with another like him eventually making a blind strain of turkeys could I call them a breed?

The APA recognizes one breed which is turkey and 8 varieties which are Beltsville Small White, Black, Bourbon Red, Bronze, Narragansett, Royal Palm, Slate and white Holland.

I believe that Holm knows the requirements to get a breed recognized. As I recall relating to chickens there must be at least 5 different people raising the breed for at least 5 years. I vaguely recall that a viable flock had to be at least 50 chickens.

Swedish Flower Hens will never be an APA certified breed because the APA requires that there be a basic color listed and the appeal of the SFH line is their multitude of colors. Cream Legbars breeders are still fighting among each other over what the breed standard should be. Until that is settled they will not be a recognized breed by the APA even though they are a recognized breed in England.

Crossing a Cream Legbar with a Barred Rock is a relatively common cross but all it creates is an F1 hybrid.

Check out the Cream Legbar Hybrid thread and there are images of the cross there.

Its the same with dogs. AKC recognizes different "varieties" within a specific breed. For example: Beagle is a recognized breed of dog with two varieties - 1 3inch and 15 inch. Dachshund is a breed of dog with several recognized varieties - smooth, long hair, wire hair and under 11 pounds.

So a turkey is a turkey divided by variety....

Chaos....are you considering some type of black turkey? I wish they had had the mottled black hens. I think they are pretty cool looking. How are the new turkeys doing? Are you sitting in the pen with them turning them into lappers??

Found some Spanish black turkeys on craigslist. Would like to get one or two slightly older (right around 1 yr old) hens for breeding purposes as I think the hen I just picked up is still a bit young but I have no clue what I'm doing. As far as turning them into lappers....not a chance....they are poultry not pets.

Chaos....it would be nice for T-Bone to have hens around his age. Hope you get them. Poor guy is probably lonely!

A picture of one of my BA hens got selected for the Official Caption Contest. Huh...just noticed.

We need to start submitting turkey pictures!!

Interesting about the turkeys..

I am glad all of mine are purebred turkeys!!!

If I allowed Penguin to live beyond next week and he had a baby it could be black, Would that be the same black as the variety that is recognized?

Of all the Baby types JJ and Ethel can make included as I recall is black, and Bourbon Red. Would it be possible for them to have varieties that are recognized when they are rusty slates AKA mutts? (but still 100% purebred turkeys)

This is all confusing, my throat is hurting, I need to mix up some cold medicine and relax I think. I am sure glad I have Grandpa's recipe. But it is going to be a long dry New Years eve for me if I am on the meds....Dang!!
