A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Interesting link - I'm going to check out what is in their feed. Do you know if they mean to add supplements existing feed? I'm not sure that I'd be comfortable trying to create a new feed for them - I'd be worried that I wouldn't make the right nutrition for them.

I know that I have to do something with the toms soon - and I'll move Big Bird out of their area while I figure out where they are going so she doesn't get hurt

I hate getting rid of them - but unless I have separate areas for everyone, it will have to happen

The original poster checked out the ingredients in different feeds until she found a feed that contained the extra ingredients in the amounts recommended. Here is her original post.

You have to get used to getting rid of turkeys. You cannot keep all of the turkeys that you have in addition to all the poults that you are going to hatch.

Thanks for the link - I'll do some reading and see if it helps.

First year with birds - can you tell? Working on accepting the part where I have to get rid of some of them. Thankfully I'm not hatching any babies - and am planning to add adults first (so that I know what they are). This bird thing is a learning curve apparently :)

As breeding season approaches, I'm finding tom behavior interesting. It minds me more of my dogs than my chickens. I guess because it's a seasonal thing with turkeys. My roosters just merrily hop on hens all year long. But as the season approaches, it's so interesting to see how the Tom's behavior is spooling. Just musing here, still on the learning curve.

Meanwhile I did dig out some of my dog agility equipment. Once the birds get over its presence, I swear I'm teaching the turkeys to run a course!

It has been a long time since I last posted in here, due to the holidays and all. Sadly, the tom that was injured back in November didn't make it - I think he died of liver failure. All of my other turkeys are doing well. For those who were wondering - yes, putting lights on turkeys will push them into breeding early.

Dad told me that I should build a turkey tractor to keep them away from the house. So I did. I don't think he liked it very much, though - maybe I should have painted it a different color?

I love the turkey tractor!

Looks like it could be anything displeasing Turkules. My turkeys, when they misbehave, are more of a puberty related thing I think and boredom. I am solving my spring time problem, by selling Ginger and Penguin and eating the rest. They will all have their own pens soon. JJ and Ethel get the largest and the Sidekick the next biggest the others tractors and coops for breeding time. At the end of breeding season they go back together. If that is a problem Turkey bacon is the solution.
